The Shaq contract pretty much confirms Tepper is JR 2.0

This board is depressing. Quit the knee jerk reactions, the world is not ending. Some of you would be happy to let every  upcoming free agent walk and for us to go 0-16

Exactly.  We don't have anyone to replace him why let good players walk?

One thing for sure. If guys thought they were down on the team before, if our defense ends up getting waxed again today, this contract isn't exactly going to instill much confidence moving forward. The defense that we've invested so much in needs to show out. The 2 win Falcons defense were able to accomplish that against us on our own field. What's our excuse?

This might be one of the most brutal contract decisions I’ve ever seen

Please tell me how many games Shaq has taken over in his career or how many pro bowls he’s been to...

If you watch, he does it all on defense.  He is 25.  Just getting it together.  Since we are not a farm team for those willing to spot and secure talent, I am happy that we retained him.

To be fair to you, I had the same opinion of him when they paid him the $9m fifth year option this season.  I did not like it.  So I watched him all season, and it changed my mind.  He is on pace to have 125-130 tackles, 4 sacks---he is a LB that  covers slot WRs at times.   This season, he was arguably our best LB---think about that.  Luke had a down year (poor DT play).

Because it’s what incompetent owners and football teams do. I would not be the least bit surprised if Fewell is our new DC and Shula our new OC. Firing Rivera was just a publicity stunt, this team will look exactly the same next year as Tepper hires a yes man HC, mark my words

Snyder 2.0.

At least we know the next HC will be “Ivy League” material.

I’m still waiting to see when Shaq was a pro bowler. And why he commands top dollar at a position where we already pay a top guy

some would, I dont like the shaq contract, but let us not pretend it's one of those gonna hurt you down the road contracts. did we over pay? yep, did we need to keep shaq because beside Luke we aint got crap at LB? yep! supply and demand at work here guys.

I think Shaq is a pretty good player, but that is a lot of money to tie up in the MLB positions (Shaq and Luke) in a 3-4 defense.  From an asset allocation perspective I'm not convinced that is the best use of cap.

There are so many big contracts that each team can hand out, and based on scheme and system there are certain positions that influence the outcome of the game more.  With that being said Burns is on a rookie contract and Luke is nearing the end of his contract so maybe that is the thinking.

Also you have to look at replacement cost.  There are certain positions that you can find easier in the draft or cheaper in free agency that are at least close in production.
