Shaq signed to 4 year extension through 2023

This was essentially Shaqs first year starting. Have to imagine he’ll get even better. People give luke a Pass this year because the dline was trash but don’t give shaq a Pass at the same time. Have to look at it a number of ways.

Also remember a ton of defensive players are done here on 1 year contracts. We need young talented core to keep for the new staff. Could also be possible we don’t resign Luke. His contract ends 2021. Concussion history and we might stick with the 3-4.

All but the elites are. I honestly think Shaq was more replaceable simply due to positional value.

That's fair, he's a linebacker and you can sort of find those. I think it's fair people look at this as another loyalty overpay but i think Shaq has solid potential to get better and even though he's had some rough patches this year, he's still also shown some positional versatility and other ways to contribute, like pass rushing.

Honestly i feel the same way as I felt when we re-signed Chris gamble back in the day. Surprisingly big contract but i wasnt too upset about it and the guy ended up being solid for the most part.

With 3-4, Shaq will go against OL a lot.  This movie by Hurney screams 2 things... 1) He does not understand 3-4 defense and 2) he will look to switch back to 4-3.

He should not be forced to face lineman, this has been the problem with our run defense this year. The purpose of the 2 330 plus pound and around 300 pound lineman that occupy the front is to take on double teams from the olineman so the 2 inside linebackers can roam freely. It allows the lbs direct shots on the RBS hopefully before they get up to steam.

I think secondary players are more at risk of having their roles change than front-7 players under a new defensive coaching staff next season. so Bradberry could well be let go because they want to revamp the whole idea of press corners with size and zone focus.

Honestly after thinking on it after the cap goes up this year the going rate for sideline to sideline lbs might skyrocket, so it might have been a good gamble that pays off when they start getting 15m a year. Shaq is a top 10 lb in this league when put in the position to succeed, he was not this year and still played good. Having the best lb and a top 10 lb beside him will make for an amazing duo when we fix the NT situation in front of them. I think it's very important we take the best one in the draft so we don't waste our lb talent.
