About this Cam Newton leaving talk...

If Cam has any chance at all to return to being the Cam we know and love and we let him walk or trade him away.

It would be the single biggest mistake in this teams History.

Even if you want to draft his eventual replacement this year, it would still be a massive mistake. I thought everyone watching Allen this year would remind y’all how rare of a talent Cam is when healthy. But apparently not. I wonder who saw the rollercoaster that is Allen coming this season? I wonder who said Remember Matt Moore? Don’t shoot yourself in the foot trying to get something when you already have something better on the roster. Cam when healthy is a top 10 if not too 5 QB in this league and that is rare enough that you don’t let him go when there is a chance for him to return to form.

end of discussion!

That is a huge IF there, OP.

I could say, that allowing him to tank the start of this season was a pretty bad mistake, would we want to allow that to happen again? Not being certain that he can hold up puts you in a bad place to make the huge financial gamble.

He is only valuable to the team if he is healthy.

I feel like he has been paid plenty to hang out this year, via his contract that the team has honored. He is under that contract next year still, I do not see a good reason to give him a raise until he shows he can be worth it. Prove it next year. I wouldn't feel any differently if it were a WR, Luke, whoever.

Are you willing to give him an extension?

(that's what it may well take)

If so, how much?

See how he does next year, if healthy and comes back 100% give him a big contract with incentives to off set the injury risk. His play history when healthy has already proven to be worthy. It’s just a question if he can stay healthy.

And if he's not willing to play on what's essentially a one year "prove it" deal, then what?

1) Allen has nothing to do with whether we keep Cam or not IMO.

which brings me to...

2)  The only reason we wouldn't retain Cam is if he isn't healthy at all, or if he may be healthy but refuses to play out his contract... When was the last time Cam finished a season as a top 5  - or really top 10 - QB?  2015.... that is a long time ago... 2016 was not a great year, and we all know how it went after that.  I don't know how you can give Cam an extension when he hasn't played healthy through a season in years - perhaps Cam would take an extremely team-friendly extension but I kind of doubt it.

That might be the sticking point. I would be, but only if it's heavily incentive based. If he returns to health and performs, game and performance based bonuses would pay him like an elite QB. If he didn't, built in protections would keep the Panthers' from being in cap hell.

The big question is, would Cam and his agent be willing to agree to such a contract?

As a running QB who is aging and likely doesn’t have his run threat anymore it’s likely Cam is not the QB everyone is thinking of we’ve had in the past. Add to the fact we still don’t know if his shoulder can last a full season and is fixed. So if he goes to another team we don’t really know if it will be a mistake.

We absolutely have to draft a QB round 1.

I can’t believe Cam really has any trade value that makes him not worth keeping. With that in mind, I absolutely think the Panther should hold on to him and see what he has training camp next year.

The problem will be does Cam really want to risk playing on a one year deal? If he can’t come back and play well he misses out on money another team would likely give him on a contract. Is he willing to take that risk? Does he really want to be here in Charlotte and give that up? No one knows.

I can’t imagine Tepper cutting Cam if Cam is willing to play out his last year and not get salty about it. I think that is the only foreseeable mistake this franchise could make and judging from Tepper’s comments I don’t think it’s likely.

You will not know if he is 100% until he plays a full season and plays it well. He looked great for the first half of 2018 and then his shoulder got to him. The last thing we need is to be stuck with Cam on a contract who can only play half a season. I’m all for keeping him but another contract shouldn’t come (if it does) until early 2021. I have no idea if Can would be OK with that.

I don't know if you'll get anything in trade when teams believe you're ready to part with him.

I do believe there are probably other teams out there who might be willing to offer him a longer term and/or more guaranteed money than we would. They just might be waiting for us to cut him so they don't have to give up anything via trade.

And if that's the case, if you're Newton, why would you take the chance of playing out a one year deal here with minimal guarantees and possibly getting injured again (especially behind the kind of offensive lines we've been fielding)?

What it boils down to is cross purposes.

Playing on a one year contract with minimal guarantees is not a good deal for Newton, especially when you figure this is his last contract.

Offering an extension with guaranteed money to a quarterback who hasn't been healthy for three years now (and is questionable going forward) is not a good deal for the Panthers.

For this to happen, someone has to cave, and both sides have very good reasons why they shouldn't.

Theres no way in hell Cam sits out next year. He has to play at least 6 games to accrue a season, so if he sits out he will still be under contract. You let him play on his current contract and work on an extension during the season if he is truly healthy

    • This has been every game this year. We get blown out and have to come back.
    • The really frustrating thing is that Hubert knows why he has to do scheme wise with this roster he just doesn't want to do it until we're down big and he's forced to do it then we come roaring back. Just do the damn thing from the get go. fug how you want to play ideally. Good coaches adapt their schemes to the talent they have. We have a lot of talent we just lack any post presence on either end of the court. Press and get after it from the opening tipoff and stop waiting until you're down 20 to do it.
