Since they talked about Ron Rivera in this game, maybe it's a good time to mention that Bears DC Chuck Pagano was an option for us at one point. Rivera used to work with his brother John in San Diego.

Instead, we chose Eric Washington.

Chuck Pagono was interviewed for the defensive back coach after Washington became the DC. He wasnt considered for DC.

I loved the Cowboys when Tom Landry was the HC on the sidelines in his hat and suit with that chiseled jaw and stare of his...meaning all business on the field with Roger the Dodger leading the way (and I'm a native Pittsburgher during that time too).

But ever since Jones bought the team and fired Landry and then hired the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Barry the criminal for HCs I've hated that team ever since......

What a joy it was to watch that team stink worse than the Panthers on a national game........

Never understood this either and another reason I'm glad we've moved on from Rivera. Pagano would've been a great hire with his experience coaching 3-4 defense considering that's what we were transition to. Another missed opportunity.

todd bowles would have been a great hire too.

the problem in dallas is if they have a successful coach who is getting credit for making them great - that's a no go for jerry.  he needs to be the reason.  that's his fatal flaw.

I would argue the Bears' defense is underachieving, given the talent and investment in their defense.

They gave up 36 points to the Bridgewater-led Saints.

How's ours been doing?

I'll grant they've had issues, but I'd definitely have taken Pagano over Eric Washington.

We're talking about entirely different rosters...theirs is immensely more talented on defense, so we can speculate on how much success Pagano would've had here with our roster but that'll be an extremely unproductive discussion.

More importantly though: you may have taken Pagano over Washington (as we all probably would have)...but if you were Pagano, would you have taken DC of the Panthers over DC of the Bears? Which job offer do you think would have been more enticing?  Inheriting an elite defense that was ranked 1st in PPG and 3rd in YPG in 2018, or a mediocre defense that was ranked 19th in PPG and 15th in YPG?  This is even assuming he would have been given complete, uninhibited control of the defense which was a BIG "if", considering the plan all offseason was for Rivera to do the playcalling.  So more realistically, your hypothetical involves Pagano accepting a glorified figurehead DC position of a mediocre defense over an unrestricted DC position of an elite defense.

We don't just get to sign whoever we want...transactions are a two-way street.  You have to consider things from the other side's perspective rather than just saying "why didn't we sign this guy" and "why didn't we sign that guy".
