I wonder if Cam Newton's health and Dave Gettleman's inability to surround him with any protection had anything to do with this (or the fact Mike Shula was his offensive coordinator).

Hurney, quite easily, produced rosters that were good enough to consistently win (not just win, win Superbowls).  Everything else in our organization was a mess, from coaching, to Dave Gettleman's mediocre to terrible drafts, to Jerry Richardson's meddling

And despite all this, he constructed rosters that took us to the brink of winning 2 Super Bowls

So, Hurney's last two failure seasons are all Gettleman's fault and the previous eleven which also combine for a losing overall record are due to RJ?

Wow.

2.  Who Reallllly gets the credit for Norman?  Yes, Hurney did draft him.  But does Rivera and Sean McDermott get the credit here?   He had 2 good years here.  Then once gone and in another system, he's been trash.

3.  Pretty sure its know that Marty, while on the staff, didn't draft Smitty.

Josh Norman had 4-5 excellent seasons.  He was really good his first year with the Redskins, just got old for a cornerback.  He showed flashes of how good he was when he was young, but we were too stubborn to give him a chance.

And yes Marty did draft Smitty, you might want to ask Steve Smith himself.  Everyone knows Hurney ran the 2001 draft.

During his speech, Smith was emotional when talking about his time in Carolina. He ended by taking off his blazer and shirt which had his Super Bowl 38 No. 89 jersey underneath.

“I’d like to thank Mr. (Jerry) Richardson and Marty Hurney for drafting me and Mr. (David) Tepper for bringing me back,” Smith said during his induction speech

We were 6-2 last year before Newton got hurt.

Not everyone is the Pittsburgh Steelers.  9 out of 10 times, if your franchise quarterback gets injured, your season is tanked.  And if you want to say we should have gotten a better backup quarterback, weren't many options better than Kyle Allen.  There's probably dozens of teams that wish they knew to sign Tannehill.

In the salary cap era, you don't have space for two elite quarterbacks.

Sorry Cam got hurt, but it doesn't reflect on Hurney's roster construction.

It's funny, even in Hurney's worst drafts used to discredit him, he still chose multiple Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers

Now here are two consecutive Patriots drafts (greatest franchise in sports history, in not only did they not come away with great players, they didn't even get any good depth.

Brandon Meriweather and a kicker are the only two players in these consecutive drafts who did anything for the Patriots.  The rest were busts.  You guys just don't understand the odds with drafts I guess.

Again, for the umpteenth time. The goal of an NFL GM is not to draft the occasional HOFer in a sea of non-NFL talents. The goal of an NFL GM is to build a roster that can consistently win in the NFL. He's been unable to do that over the course of 13 NFL seasons.

Ok by that standard, the Patriots are terrible at drafting

And literally every team in the NFL

Because if you want to look at a decade of drafts for any manager, and not find the majority of them are a 'sea of non NFL talents', you'll be looking forever

You're still stuck on drafting. Did you read the post you quoted? The job is to build a consistent winner and there's multiple ways to do it. No one has done that better than the Patriots.

Nor does the Jeff Otah pick. Dude was a beast on the field. Just imagine if he could've given us 7-8 years.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
