Cam Newton plans to have foot surgery

Also, I know and trust what Jeremy and Zack have said, but I also wonder if the situation is more fluid than what the whispers have let on.  Since the rumors first started circulating that Cam would be out, Tepper's public statements have sounded increasingly hopeful that Cam will be here next season.  So, I know to trust what our guys here have heard, but I can't help but want to believe things may be changing as all these other things are changing within the organization.  IMO, it's worth it to see if Cam can come back healthy for one more year.  He's already under contract at a bargain price if he returns to form...  unless the issue is whether Cam will actually play under the existing contract?

This again.  He's never been a battering ram.  He's a rushing QB because this is what makes him special.

It baffles me that people blame the coaches for implementing a style of offense that best utilizes Cam's skills.  Take away Cam's running ability and he's basically Jameis Winston or Joe Flacco.

He was a rushing QB. Much like Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Duante Culpepper, Donovan McNabb, Warren Moon.... all of them, at some point, had to become pocket passers when their legs no longer kept them out of harm's way.

Cam Newton has already shown us he's not going to be running much anymore, so one of 2 things happen: he either becomes a good pocket passer, or he's out of work. All those seasons he averaged between 7-9 carries per game, 125-130 per season, are over.

This is hope, they are looking at actuality, and probability.

The probability that Cam both wants to play here, and would be willing to do so on a 1 year prove it deal are very low.

The actuality of the Panthers saving a lot of money on their cap is very real, as is the fact that Cam likely can't fully participate in yet another offseason, and has missed a LOT of time over the past two seasons....just doesn't bode well.

I'd welcome Cam back next season with open arms, if he will play out his contract, and if he can take part in offseason activities fully.  If he wants a new deal, we will have to cut him or try to trade him.

He won't be close to recovered come March.

Typical lis franc surgeries require the first 6-12 weeks in a cast or boot with no weight bearing at all. This puts him into January-February before he can even begin putting the slightest weight on it, let alone walking around. Follow this with another 6-12 weeks of rehab and strength training to lose the atrophy and regain leg strength and you're into April.

I don't follow salary cap stuff that much, so what's the date the team needs to make a decision on him with regard to a cap hit?

The day before the season opens.

This would be a really shitty thing to do to Cam though, and I don't believe that we will do this.

There are only 3 options with Cam at this point.

1:  He plays out his current contract here.

2:  He gets traded.

3:  He gets cut.

2 and 3 are the most likely, IMO.

If Carolina can release him at any time and not take a cap hit, Cam's decision to have surgery gave away any leverage he may have had. He'll still be rehabbing following surgery when the draft takes place.

No OTAs, nothing to show he could be ready by the start of the season; I don't see any way he's a starting QB anywhere in the league after 3 surgeries in 3 years and nobody knows if he can take a snap and execute a 7-step drop a few weeks before the draft?

Why would anyone trade for Cam? He's damaged goods.

We do take a small cap hit no matter what we do.  Cap hit of 2M, with a savings of 19M (another feather in the cap if DG on this one, really good contract structure).

I think by prolonging the surgery, he effectively forced his way out of Charlotte.  Used the injury as leverage.

I think the prospect of playing another year for Rivera, behind a crap O line, and with lackadaisical skill players, made Cam, already known to not be a fan of surgeries, much more hesitant about getting cut on to give himself the chance to fully heal for next season. I think Rivera's departure has given him some hope that he'll either get a coach that will value/protect and utilize him properly, or one that will let him walk, in which case he needs to do everything he can to prepare his body to get healthy enough for Free Agency.

I hope we get a coach that wants to use Cam and CMC together to destroy defenses. We've got generational talents at QB and RB. SOMEONE out there has to be licking their chops at what they could do to opposing defenses with Cam and CMC.

Agree, and I'm not thinking the compensation would be anywhere near what most posters think it would be on this board....but Beane traded for KB.  Pats traded for Ealy.  All it takes is 1 sucker, and the NFL is full of them.

these kinda seem to me like the actions of a guy who doesn't really want to play football again.

Could be true.  Certainly doesn't seem like the actions of someone who is busting their tail to get back on the field.

I have been posting here for about 15 years and I have never seen so much toxicity and lack of hope.  I remember the days of Tommy Jone and BJDJS, but the negative and cynical comments are way worse now, especially directed towards one player.

Say what you will about Reddit, but it seems the majority of the perspective there (minus game threads) is thought out, reasoned, and non-personal.

I thought Igo was just pushing the negative Cam stuff to drive some traffic, which is fine, but it seems to have emboldened the truly vile posters here.

If you point this out they will say you are the one spreading negativity.....

Edit: By the way since the Cam/KA BS panthers reddit page and the huddle have been like night and day.
