"Part of the process" is a long way from being in charge of it.

Heck, sitting in the corner taking notes is technically "part of the process".

Yes, everyone else thought he'd get fired too and I told yall he wouldn't.  I'm telling you that Tepper likes him and trust him and he's going to have major input on both the coach and assistant gm position. I never said he would be in charge just said he would be hiring and I'm pretty confident he will be.

Basically what I'm saying is don't get your Hope's up of a major name coming in to take the assistant gm/vp of football position.  Because it will be under Hurney who will still be the Defacto GM and final decision maker.

The goal is to take some things off his plate like Beane did. Who basically did both these jobs when he was here.

Look for someone younger who can be groomed and take over in 2-3 years and if Hurney shits the bed, maybe in another year.

Yet Tepper never said, when it would have been easy to do so, "Marty is remaining the GM". He talked instead about changing the structure.

He may indeed be retained. He may well keep the same title. But right now I don't buy the notion that he goes into next season with anywhere near the same amount of power he has now.

Person confirmed earlier today that

1. Hurney will indeed remain the gm.

2. The assistant gm/vp is the same position

3. Hurney will be involved in the hiring process of this assistant gm.

4. The coaching search will be conducted by a panel but no word on who is on that panel.

Now my take on the above, hurney is one of the last remaining people in the scouting department and football ops side. So I'd be shocked if Hurney isn't involved on #4 in addition to #3.

Here again, you're in the dark.

Hurney doesn't have any "power"....

....he simply lays out a series of choices --- which Tepper then makes.

I very much highly doubt that Colbert or anyone major is going to come on board and work under Hurney. We know this to be the case because Hurney is going to be hiring.

of all the sht transpiring this is what makes me want to call Tepp Dan Haslam....just dont understand but hes Money Money....

Pretty much anyone we would want as a potential GM, including Colbert or Caserio, is under contract through the draft (that's why most front office/scouting moves are made following the draft).  So, regardless of Tepper's intent with the position, he pretty much has no choice but to keep Hurney around to run the draft before he can make any changes.

And from everything known about Tepper, sentimentality will have very little bearing on his business decisions.  So it really doesn't matter how much he likes Hurney, if he doesn't think he is the right man for the job, he will let him go.

Going back and refreshing myself on Tepper's discussion with Voth, I don't think I see Colbert in the VP role for one primary reason, age.

Tepper referred to Marty Hurney as being "more senior" and seemed to indicate he wants someone younger in the VP spot, also thinking of them as a potential GM of the future.

Colbert is actually older than Marty.

Now mind you. that doesn't discount interest in Colbert, only says that this would not be the correct role for him. The VP bit sounds much more up the alley of a guy like Nick Caserio.

Colbert, on the other hand, could be the kind of guy that you give a broad brush to help reshape the organization then retire or accept a consultant role.

Person didn't confirm anything except his own interpretation of what we all heard.  Tepper hasn't come out and said anything specific, just general statements that don't box him in to anything.

I don't think GM is off the table.  There was virtually no specific mention of the GM long-term, or what his plans are for the job.  The only thing we can safely assume is that Tepper doesn't want to lose Hurney at least through the draft.

So lets say Tepper wants Colbert, Caserio, or someone else, he's going to have to wait until after the draft to bring them in.  In that case, he really can't talk about his plans.

And I found it quite interesting that he also didn't make it clear that Marty was going to be the GM in this front office shakeup.  Sometimes. silence says a whole lot.  To be honest, I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't reassign Hurney into a different role that better fits his strengths.  In fact, it's possible that they have already had some discussions along those lines.  If that is indeed the case, then there would be nothing to stop us from bringing in a new GM while still hiring a VP/Asst. GM after the draft while still keeping Marty.

For the record, I think if Colbert comes in, it will be in more of a consultant/mentor role to help get the team headed in the right direction.  If we do move on from Marty and bring someone different in as the GM, it will likely be Caserio or some other hot shot up and comer.  I get the impression Tepper is all about modern, innovative ideas, not some holdover philosophies from a bygone era.

Pointed that last part out to a few people myself...

Regarding contract stuff, yes, Colbert is under contract through the draft. He was actually offered a two year extension back before the start of the season but declined it. Despite his success in Pittsburgh, there's loads of speculation that he and the Steelers are headed for a split. I would agree though that for us, he sounds more like a consultant at this point.

There's also word that the Steelers have already identified Colbert's successor, and it's not Omar Khan. They're expected to instead go with Pro Personnel Chief Brandon Hunt.

With regard to Caserio, I think his contract may actually expire at the end of the season, but there's some backstory there.

General belief right now is that Caserio and the Pats are headed for a nasty split. The Texans were prepared to offer him their GM job last year but Bill Belichick jumped in and started crying that the Texans had tampered (by all accounts, for no other reason than that he was being a dick) and the whole thing ended up falling through.

The Texans chose not to hire a GM at all, and the general expectation became that Caserio would get the Texans job this season after his contract expired. But Houston has now announced that they aren't going to hire a new GM next year either, and word is that Caserio is piiiiiiiisssssed.

By the way, where you been, dude?

Yeah, that Caserio thing is going to be ugly.  And from what I've heard (much of it probably from you), Khan is a Colbert guy, so it's not surprising he's not the heir apparent if the team is indeed headed for a split from KC.

It would actually make a lot of sense for Colbert to come in as a consultant with Khan being either the GM or Asst. GM/GM in waiting.  Let Colbert be the bridge between the current Panther model and the changes Tepper wants to make, while Khan find his footing.
