Scouting Department Potentially Gutted

Untouchable

On the flipside though, if you're gutting that department, why would you then turn around and keep the guy who organized it?

If it genuinely is something like them being told their contracts won't be renewed, that's plausible and the timing would make a lot more sense.

If this is the case, then Hurney isn't in charge anymore.

If Hurney isn't in charge any longer, why is he still GM?

If they've been told that their contracts aren't being renewed, then that sets up this exact scenario and it's not at all unprecedented.

Remember, the story doesn't specify that this is happening right now.

Why would you tell employees that you are going to rely on to be at pro days, evaluate and interview prospects right before their busiest time of the year that they won’t have jobs afterwards? You think that would motivate them to do their best? You would hire a GM and tell them they are being evaluated by him to keep their job.

This would be like telling retail employees they are losing their jobs after the holidays, two days before Black Friday.

Do we absolutely have to have one right now?

We pretty much went through the lion's share of the 2012 season without one. That was eleven games if I remember correctly. This time we're only talking about four.

When it comes to Marty Hurney as GM, I am all in favor of addition by subtraction prior to the end of the regular season.

Just waiting for an official announcement.

Until then, I'll assume Marty is still GM and making bad decisions.

Which scenario is worse? telling them now so that they can make plans for their future or waiting until the draft ends, walking in and seeing "Hey thanks guys, you're all fired"?

The in that if they perform poorly in the time they have left on their contracts, they're only slitting their own throats.

No argument.

I've gotten my hopes up just to be disappointed before. Don't want to see that again.

He isn’t really capable of doing anything bad right now that would have any tangible future effect on the team. Any major re-signings would have to go through Tepper.

If this rumor about the scouts being let go is true, who is responsible for hiring their replacements?

I would think that would be the GM.

It's going to be the next GM, but even if it is true, it's not now. It's probably in April.
