You're saying Gettleman's win-loss record here isn't as good as Hurney's?

You might want to look those stats up

No I am saying that Hurney record has been better than Gettlemans since Gettleman left.  By your logic our record would have been that of the Giants the last 2 seasons

Yeah, that was with a different team so I don't care.

But even if you want to go that route, Gettleman took over one of the worst teams in the league. Marty took over a ready made playoff team and has run it into the ground.

If you seriously think anything Marty has done in the last two years justifies keeping him beyond this point, I can't help you.

Both were trash

Gettleman- not so great drafter up top.  Pretty good at filling the rest of the roster and depth.  A big reason for the Panthers success in his time here.  His failures drafting up top have hurt us.  Still thought enough of to get picked right up for a NFL job after being canned.

Hurney- fantastic drafting up top (though most of those picks were high picks).  Terrible management of the rest of the roster filling out depth etc.  Horrible mid round drafter, a spot where you need to hit on to find solid starters.  Hurney after being fired, didn't get a phone call from anyone but the local radio station.  Tells you about how he is thought of by the people who actually know things.

Gettleman came in, won Executive of the Year, then tried to strong arm the franchise.  That's what cost him.  Now he's dealing with the consequences of his rigid inflexibility.  Gettleman has "his way" which can work just as easily as it fails.  Having MVP Cam Newton helps immensely.

Team building:  I'd say it's even.  Neither has been particularly good in that regard.  Drafting?  I'd say Hurney tends to get better players who fit the team.  Gettleman did much better with FA bargain hunting.  I will say that if they could combine their powers, they'd be a pretty good GM.

This is a extremely well put.

For whatever reason the team as a whole played much better when Gettleman was GM. Maybe because they knew he'd cut them if they had a game like Bene did?

Or maybe because Cam Newton was in his prime and healthy, and this is a quarterback driven league where the biggest variable that influences wins and losses is quarterback play

It's not that complicated

If faced with the choice of having Hurney or Gettleman then clearly I'd choose Hurney. I pretty much hated Gettleman's draft picks and FA signings, so there is no chance in hell I would have Gettleman back. I can tolerate Hunrey because I have liked some of his draft picks and FA signings. I was one of the very few Panthers fans who wanted to draft Cam Newton, and Hurney wisely pulled the trigger, and that decision is the main reason we were able to make it to the SB years later. The majority of Huddlers at the time thought Cam would be a massive bust and that he was similar to JaMarcus Russell, but as the draft day approached the negativity died down because most thought we'd draft him.

Let me be clear though, if I owned the Panthers I'd go find the GM and HC that best fit my vision for what I wanted the team to become. I'd fire Ron and Marty in a heartbeat. I don't like this current Panthers team, and I would start the rebuilding process with firings. I would NEVER hire Gettleman as a GM. His terrible drafting drove me crazy, and his horrendous FA signings almost got Ron fired at the time. I am not going to list the FA signings that led Ron to say "we should have been thrown out on our ears" during an interview. I HATED Gettleman's draft picks and his FA signings, and Gettleman's personality is unbearable. There is 0% chance of Gettleman being around if I owned the Panthers.

In defense of both Gettleman and Hurney, they have both been hamstrung by HCs who are married to a blueprint for building a team that is inferior and outdated. The old timely lunch pale Joe type team that tries to win with defense and accepts mediocre QB play is garbage. The Pittsburgh Steelers blue collar blueprint, spending more on defense than offense, accepting any moderately decent QB, I am truly sick of it. It hasn't produced a SB win for us, and I don't see anything in the next few seasons on the horizon for us. Hell some of our older Panthers fans will die without ever enjoying a SB win. Is that the blueprint you want to follow?

This has been discussed ad nauseam and no ones opinion ever changes.

Bottom line is Gettleman put together the most successful 5 year stretch in franchise history. The team as a whole performed better with him as GM.

Team record with Gettleman at the helm 51-28-1

Team record with Hurney at the helm 102-118. Hurney's best 5 year stretch had his record at 45-35

Gettleman haters don't like him because he cut their favorite players. They don't see the bottom line as they are too attached emotionally to the players as individuals, and often times refuse to acknowledge that many of the issues he had while compiling the team were due to the limited cash he had to work with due to Hurney's first tenure. We still made the playoffs 4/5 years with Ron Rivera as the head coach.

Gettleman might not have been as good as Hurney at drafting in the first round (even though he consistently drafted in the second half of rounds due to his teams actually succeeding), and he might have been a asshole, but he was better at putting an overall team together than Hurney.

I will die on this hill even if no one else will. People who would rather have Hurney as GM over Gettleman are wrong because the evidence shows that the team sucks way less when Gettleman was running the show with his iron FUPA.
