Gettleman vs Hurney... who is the better GM

Just wondering what people are thinking. We have Gettleman who got us out of cap hell but also let Norman go for nothing and kicked Smitty out. Then you have Hurney 1.0 who sent the Panthers into years of cap hell and Hurney 2.0 who has seemed to learn from his mistakes as far as contracts but is still making questionable personnel decisions.

I don’t care much for either one of them and am hoping Tepper finally fills this position with a much needed upgrade

As far as their results with the Panthers, Gettleman.

As far as right now, it doesn't matter. Only one of them still works here.

It may have been a stupid move to fire Gettleman, but it's done, he's gone and he's never coming back. The only debate that truly matters now is between Marty and his potential replacements.

And on that front, I'll go with one of his potential replacements.

Hurney took a small market team with a bad owner and orchestrated teams that went to the Super Bowl, TWICE.  He has drafted more Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers than nearly any general manager in league history.

Gettleman inherited a team with 9 Hurney Pro Bowlers, and made it much worse, and destroyed (possibly ended) Cam Newton's career by not protecting him.  Now as he's 2-10 in New York, a laughingstock of the entire league, loathed by all Giants fan, and routinely ranked as the worst general manager in football for all the insane decisions he's made the past 2 years. It's a regular meme on the main NFL subreddit that Gettleman is the worst manager in all of sports.  He's been an abject failure everywhere he's gone.

Gettleman has never signed a great player, never made a great trade like Greg Olsen for a third, never drafted Hall of Famers, never done anything.

But this forum bought into his scam and big talk so much they can't see the obvious truth.

And gauging from the way the Giants look, gettleman getting fired wasn't a bad call. Guy has lost it.

I still think it was. He was better here.

Lot of people up north believe that Shurmur is going to get fired and replaced by Ron Rivera. I haven't followed the Giants that closely over the last two years, but I have to admit that idea intrigues me.

I'd pay attention to see what happens if they're together again.

Two Super Bowls, right :eyeroll:

Believe what you believe, kid. But just so you know, few things look dumber than "everything Hurney did was good, everything Gettleman did was bad, and anything Gettleman accomplished must be credited to Hurney".

That's not a credible argument. It's actually highly emotional and frankly, borderline delusional.

(and I'm being kind when I say "borderline")

Gettleman came in, won Executive of the Year, then tried to strong arm the franchise.  That's what cost him.  Now he's dealing with the consequences of his rigid inflexibility.  Gettleman has "his way" which can work just as easily as it fails.  Having MVP Cam Newton helps immensely.

Team building:  I'd say it's even.  Neither has been particularly good in that regard.  Drafting?  I'd say Hurney tends to get better players who fit the team.  Gettleman did much better with FA bargain hunting.  I will say that if they could combine their powers, they'd be a pretty good GM.

Doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters now is Hurney and if he is good enough at his job to warrant yet another season with the Panthers.

I prefer to go off of 1 thing over the course of how long Marty has been here, his record.

If you are discussing small sample sizes, you have to work in injuries, abrupt retirements, lockouts, etc....when you are looking at 10+ years, it's straight to the record under his leadership, and the winning seasons are sorely lacking.

I want a better GM than either.

Lol of course you think he would be better here, even tho his record doesn't reflect that.  Makes no sense

I think it’s unfair to even say at this point. What could DG have done with those top 10 draft picks when people say Marty got us cam luke peppers etc. while Dave got us cmc with a top ten pick.

Marty is generally terrible at putting teams together. On the flip side dg botched late first round picks, gave Kalil that contract and the Norman fiasco. I was pretty adamant that dg was doing a good job not only with some of the picks and signings to create some really good teams up until 2016/2017 but he also demanded results up until that point as opposed to Marty handing out ridiculous contracts to injured/average players and having that gee golly gosh were a family mantra.

The Norman fiasco and Kalil signing were awful. We have not had one GM that could sustain success. We need a complete overhaul in organizational identity from top to bottom.

Tepper has a short leash with me before I just completely not give a fug about this team.

    • The bottom lines to me are that a) we played well enough to beat the best team in the league and b) Bryce Young is growing into a bridge QB role (his ceiling) for us. As much as I don't want BY around after the season, it seems DC can still build the O with a game manager at QB for now. Best case scanario, we can build the D through the draft this year and take a QB we have conviction outside the 1st this or next draft. If BY keeps improving, we are going to win a couple more games this year.
    • Bryce has been a completely different QB since coming back. That started in Denver where it was obviously he was playing a lot more loose and willing to push the ball downfield  Bryce continues to build off of the previous weeks performance and that’s what you want to see Bryce has been making some real good anticipation throws. Reading defenses well. Pushing the ball downfield (7 throws of 20+ air yards yesterday. 8 if you want to include PI to Thielen). The deep ball accuracy has been there. Some of Young’s best throws yesterday were incompletions. Sideline balls to XL and Moore both should’ve been caught. RZ dot to Tremble should’ve been caught. And another RZ ball to Moore that Young gave him a chance at. Bryce is starting to execute Canales offense and yesterday Canales finally opened it up a bit. Canales was to blame for the 126 passing yards in Germany as he played a more conservative game.  The next bit I’m looking for his for Young to be a bit more decisive with running the ball. Start putting that on film and it’ll help open things up a tad
    • This KC team isn't the juggernaut it once was.  How many one score games have they won this season?  How many of those one score wins would probably have been loses if Mahomes wasn't the QB?  Their secondary is vulnerable and it was obvious today.  Grandpa Thielen was able to get open at will all game long. Bryce played well, but thinking this is the exact same KC defense Young was able to move the ball against as last year isn't going to compute.  Last year's KC defense was #2 overall.  They have regressed. I've said it before, Bryce can move the ball before the red zone, but once there, he struggles.  He is not a threat with his legs and the passing windows get much tighter.  He's not turning the ball over, so that is a great place to start and build upon.  I still question much better he can get.  Beyond a game manager?  I highly doubt it.
