Hurney 2.0 - The Best and The Worst moves

Jeremy Igo

i think his drafting has to be added to how bad of a gm he is.   he overlooked the interior of the line this past year when there were lots of great choices.  he traded away pick 77 to go up and get little who was a giant reach when he could have stood pat and solidified the interior for the next 10 years.   basically he's like me when i get that 'buy it now' fever over something and can't think straight until i click that button.   that's him on draft day.   somehow i have enough money to buy a jet powered surf board but haven't.   hurney would have spent all my money on it once that fever hit when the foundation of the house needed that 10k

What are you rambling about, Hurney has knocked the past two drafts out of the park.

To those who are convinced Hurney is a fool, they demand a level of perfection that no general manager in NFL history has ever achieved.  Forget if Hurney drafts multiple pro bowlers, and even late rounds gems (Donte Jackson, Ian Thomas, Dennis Daley, Kyle Allen, etc), they demand him to be the first general manager in NFL history who has never missed on a late round pick.

Ozzie Newsome is widely considered the best drafter in modern history.  I challenge anyone to go through Newsome's history in the mid rounds and not find that over half of them were busts.   You can even do Belichick or anyone else.

It's completely lunacy.

Good:

Burns, Moore- the 1 thing Hurney is good at is his 1st round picks.  Neither player was projected to fall to us, so we got lucky.

Bad- Ganope over Butker

Paradis- an injured OL who's GM said he had concerns with the guy post injury.  And didnt want to resign him.     No we're not talking about Matt Kalil.  We're talking about Paradis, who has graded out as the leagues worst Center this year.

Gaulden- yes guys dont turn out sometimes.  Difference here is unlike Dashon Hall who didnt last with Gettleman.  NO ONE had Gaulden going that high.  At least Hall, when we got up to pick.  Everyone had him as one of the best available.  When we drafted Gaulden.  It was ome of those where the guys on the TV had to scramble to find something on him.  No one expected him to be picked up higher than the 5th rd.  And like @Jeremy Igo said.  Scouts told him, but he ignored him like he has done a lot in the past, and really reached.

Hmmmm... not so sure about that. We won't know for another year or two. We all thought the 2011 draft class was good until only one player was left on the team after three years.

GMs should always be evaluated by the combined total of all their moves, and the easiest way to do that is look at the teams record. So far under Hurney 2.0 the Panthers are 12-16.

What a shocker, a team has a losing record when their franchise quarterback goes down with season ending injuries.

We were 6-2 last season with a healthy Cam.

Hurney picked up one of the best backup qbs in the league in Kyle Allen, but you need a top 15 quarterback to win in the NFL, and it's not reasonable to expect any team to carry two of those at once.

I’m fine with our QB room. We have a HC that wants to hang his hat on our defense, and we’ve spent a ton of resources on defense. Our defense should be good and Kyle Allen shouldn’t be asked to do too much. Yet, our defense sucks.

See, this to me is our biggest issue this year.  Honestly, our offense is fine given our QB is a rookie.  We're scoring more than the NFL average - 23.3 points per game versus NFL average of 22.4.  Our defense on the other hand is surrendering WAY above average - 26.7 points per game versus an NFL average of 22.4.

If our defense was closer to our historic levels, we would be a playoff team this year.  Even shaving three points per game off our defensive average would be a winning season.

People need to pump the brakes on Greg Little.

He looked excellent when  he started before his 2nd concussion.

If you can land two potential franchise left tackles who showed a lot of promise as rookies in Dennis Daley and Greg Little, without using a first round pick, in one draft, I can't imagine how anyone would be a critic.

It goes back to one of the knocks on Hurney that one of our resident inside guys talked about. He'd go ape over some mediocre player and be set to draft him while the scouts were desperately trying to talk him out of it.

Obviously, the prime example of that is Jimmy Clausen.

Similar issue were the various times he basically "negotiated against himself", either setting high salary numbers for players nobody else was that interested in (like when the Falcons fooled him into thinking they were going after Charles Johnson) or overdrafting someone he was sure another team was going to pick when in reality they had no interest (Greg Little being the latest example on that one).

And of course there's the first round pick trades. I'm pretty sure for a while there we had a rep for being suckers. Teams were still calling and trying to get us to trade future first rounders even after Gettleman took over.

Im not going to put Daley as a win quite yet.

While he does look good this year.  How many times have we seen rookies have a GOOD rookie year, then fall off?

Donte Jackson

Ian Thomas

KB

Boston

Bene

Good call.

My concern with both Little and Daley is whether either of them is built to last. That's especially true with Little.

Of course, the game where he gave up a record number of pressures doesn't exactly sit that well either.

Is Daley really our LT of the future? Our line is so bad, are we really sure that he is that good or just better by comparision? Kinda like how Moton looked good but it tuens out he is pretty blah. Seems more like a maybe with some projection of hope added in.

What about the contracts he adjusted? Those are looking like some expensive hurdles now.

He's the highest graded rookie tackle per Pro Football Focus

Andre Dillard and Cody Ford have graded out terribly, and Jonah Williams has yet to play a snap.  Who else should we have drafted?

Fun fact, Dennis Daley is PFF's highest graded rookie tackle in the NFL.

Rookie tackles tend to struggle, and even Andre Dillard and Cody Ford are being called busts by their respective franchises.  Jonah Williams has yet to play a game.

Remember when PFF said Little had an amazing game when he clearly was resposible for a strip sack? They are not that great with grading OLinemen.

    • Who mentioned anything about money? I said they are bad people. When you have that kind of power you tend to be a jerk. It's common that most rich people think they are above everyone else.   It's why these owners always get caught up in some scandal. There are more than we know about trust me. Some pay off people to keep quiet. Hell we already dealt with it with JR. My issue is not with their wealth. My issue is what that wealth brings which can be some evil tendencies...
