Hurney 2.0 - The Best and The Worst moves

When Hurney was named "interim GM" and placed in charge of "finding a new GM" we all knew it was a ruse. No legitimate search ever happened. Jerry Richardson's long time friend was back in the saddle.

Fast forward two and a half years, what has been HurnDogs' best and worst moves as GM?

My opinion:

The Best

Drafting DJ Moore. Moore has grown leaps and bounds this season and is now among the top tier receivers in the league. Hurney could always be relied on to select a solid first round pick.

Drafting Dennis Daley, a sixth round pick that will likely end up being the franchise left tackle for years to come. That right there is NFL gold.

Signed Julius Peppers to 1 year contract. Seeing Julius back home for a season was a thing of beauty.

The Worst

Chose Gano over Butker. So many of us saw this as a huge mistake and called him out on it immediately. It made no sense at the time, and it still doesn't. To make matters worse he kept two kickers on the roster for a long while and got nothing out of it.

Drafted Rashaan Gaulden in round three. Classic Hurney here. Ignore the scouts and go with your gut. Gaulden never had a chance of making any impact on the team and wasn't cut his rookie year only because he was a mistake of a third round draft pick.

Failed to address backup QB adequately. When Cam's shoulder gave out in 2018 it was clear to anyone paying attention that his 2019 season would be in doubt. A serious backup plan was needed, but never made. Kyle Allen and Will Grier aren't QBs of a team that you expect to win this season. Fail. Fail. Fail.

I know I am probably missing some. What are some more best and worsts?

Add McCoy to the good and about 50 other things to the bad.

Literally every general manager has drafted someone as bad as Gaulden in the third round.

What is Daeshaon Hall up to these days?

The Butker decision was Riveras, which is why we kept 2 kickers on the roster.

Kyle Allen is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL, and who else was available?

Hurney's biggest mistake was singing Paradis.

I think the Paradis move was bad.  Think Larsen was better.

I wasn’t sold on Larsen because of Cam and Ryan’s relationship and Ryan’s ability to adjust the line. But once Ryan was gone we should have gone Larsen and spent that money elsewhere.

I don't think McCoy was a bad choice, but Igo is right that he hasn't been the home run people thought he would be either.

Now restructuring KK Short the way he did to free up cap space for McCoy; that was utter stupidity (basically a rehash of how he got us into cap hell in his first stint).

Ya that’s on Hurney 100% and we didn’t even get KK this year. McCoy + KK would have been brutal. Ugh.

Gano over Butker is the only one of the 3 you mentioned that I see as a huge misstep.

I’m fine with our QB room. We have a HC that wants to hang his hat on our defense, and we’ve spent a ton of resources on defense. Our defense should be good and Kyle Allen shouldn’t be asked to do too much. Yet, our defense sucks.

I think his biggest mistake has been keeping Ron Rivera.

I don’t have a lot of confidence in our strength and conditioning or medical teams either.

Given that he basically offered up his head in order to save Rivera from being fired back in 2012, it's kind of hard to imagine he was ever going to fire him or truly hold him accountable, especially not while Jerry Richardson was still around.

The reality is, Hurney hasn't made any very serious mistakes, and the fact we're reaching for him missing on a third round draft pick (when less than 30% of 3rd rounders contribute in the NFL), shows that.

Hurney is getting a lot of blame for having the misfortune of an inheriting the team when Cam Newton's body failed him, rather than inheriting Cam Newton in his prime.

Not many general managers are going to win when their franchise quarterback goes down, even if they draft DJ Moore and Brian Burns.  Kyle Allen was the best we could have done given the situation.

It's easy to forget we were 6-2 last year before Newton got hurt.

All of the above and then:

Paradis- maybe Hurney doesn’t get all the blame here but the Broncos didn’t want him for a reason

Williams- not one other GM showed interest in him.

Little- Why do you trade up for this guy

Reid- great as a SS. Sucks in coverage. Unable to cover up his weakness in obvious passing situations

Slye- obviously not an NFL caliber kicker

Not performance related, but a question I think is worth asking...

Does anybody really believe that Marty knew nothing how about Jerry Richardson's... habits?

I’m convinced that most people in the building(including Ron) knew about them but said nothing

I can actually buy that Rivera didn't, although I don't totally discount the idea that he might have.

Hurney? Yeah, that's a much tougher pill to swallow.

When evaluating GMs, people tend to fixate on praising or nitpicking individual moves. But a GM picks the head coach and puts together the entire roster. They have complete control over the end result you see on the field.

Who cares if their top 10 pick was a complete bust if they fielded a championship caliber team?

Who cares if they drafted an all-pro in the 6th round if the final team they put together went 4-12?

GMs should always be evaluated by the combined total of all their moves, and the easiest way to do that is look at the teams record. So far under Hurney 2.0 the Panthers are 12-16.

    • I'd rather figure out a way to get Howell from Seattle.  I think he would do really well in Canales offense.  I also think Howell would do great with this offensive line. Thoughts?
    • 30 points a game. People were hoping to get 17-21 with Young at Qb. This week will be a tougher defense sure would be nice to eat off their plate.
