Hurney 2.0 - The Best and The Worst moves

If you want to be intellectually dishonest and not give Hurney the bulk of the credit for the 2013, 2015, 2017 (given he drafted and traded for virtually all of our talent), then sure, you can twist it that way.

Anyone without an agenda to grind can be honest that he took a small market team to 2 separate Super Bowls with dozens of Pro Bowl draft picks and acquisitions.

He definitely had some bad years, but it was due to a rotation of bad quarterbacks.  Once he drafted Cam Newton, he was fired before he could ever enjoy his prime.  Once he came back, Cam Newton is injured.

The reality is that Hurney hasn't produced a winning season since 2008.

You can give Hurney partial credit for Gettleman's success here in Carolina if you like, but if you do, you also have to give Gettleman credit for his efforts as well.

Regardless, fact remains, Hurney has not assembled a winning roster since his return and has produced a total of 3 winning rosters in 14 seasons (without help from another GM).

I am getting the distinct impression you either have some sort of weird fetish for mediocrity or you are Marty Hurney, because I doubt even Marty's own family would defend him this hard.

Judging a gm by his record is about as asinine as the people who kept screaming Kyle Allen is 5-0, when it was clear he had some flaws that were being covered by a defense playing well and cmc in mvp track.

even worst is saying backup qb wasn’t address when even as poor as Kyle has played at times he has shown he is still one of the better backups in the league, defense has been atrocious lately and the op had numerous threads hyping up Allen prior to his downfall of you want to call it that.

Also since some of you want to say Allen is still a “rookie” in terms of the nfl, if that is the case our record is still better than coaches who are fielding 1st round qbs this year(giants, cardinals, redskins).

even then if his worst moves are keeping gano and picking gaulden, who himself was his worst enemy, and signing paradis and Williams(who’s completely off the books next season) neither of the above are fireable offense and still may put hurney 2.0 in the top 10 of gm’s from a standpoint of roster building.

lastly I can’t sit here and list a laundry list of reasons why Rivera needs to be fired than turn around a place that blame at the foot of the gm. However tepper is the only one who would know whether hurney tried moving on from Rivera or if he hitch his wagon to his success as a head coach , which if it’s the lather, than he’s set himself up to be canned with Ron

Until the league starts giving out trophies for draft picks and free agent classes, yeah I'm gonna have to go with win loss record.

Mind you, you do have to look at the combination of GM and head coach when you do that.

You wanna take a look at what our current combination's record is?

marty sucks, gman sucks.   '15 was luck.   go look at gman now.   look at marty now.  they both suck.   they are both complete failures.   good riddance to both of them.  there is no argument that rivera did better with gman other than luck.  you can't pretend its skill when you look at their gm careers.  they're fuggin awful.    we suck at this.  i hope somehow we can get someone good, even if its blind luck

No because I’ve never been a fan of Rivera, and that’s the thing, Whether Hurney or gettleman the same persistent issues that plague this team and prevented them from winning back to back seasons have been at the feet of Rivera, talent is clearly there, especially when you lead the league in sacks, have the 2nd leading rusher and a WR who’s #4 in receiving yards yet your ball club is 5-7.

Go by record if you like, but it’s a rather lazy evaluation of the gm position. Especially when looking at the redzone play calling this season alone which has cost us 3 games easily.

furthermore I’d like the know the gm and coach combination, that isn’t bellichick, if you told them there franchise qb would only be healthy 11 games out of 2 seasons they would having a winning record let alone a playoff appearance

far too easy to skip semantics like the above and just go look at the w/L total

Wrong. It's the big picture evaluation.

Phil Savage drafted Joe Thomas, arguably the best left tackle in NFL history.

He also helped put together rosters that couldn't win squat around him.

Which of those do you think actually matters?

I think that being a GM in the salary cap era is a matter of picking your poison.  You have limited cap space, and you have to choose where to spend them.  If we spend more cap space on a veteran qb, that means less to spend in other areas.  And I think that Marty and Ron's decisions this year related to the back up qb have proven to be ok.  In other areas not so much.  Kyle has played well enough to give us a shot to win in all but two of his starts.  In other areas the decisions made ranged from not good to absolutely horrid.   Our defensive line play regarding the run d and our pass blocking have both been horrid.  Marty and Ron should have done a better job addressing those, and that concerns me far more than our backup qb.

I don't know how you can have this take, and then look at the Gano contract extension and think that was a good idea.

What we saved in K salary could have gone toward a good backup QB.  Let's face it, Marty just ins't good with roster construction, or long term planning.

Welp, now I’ve heard it all...this would have been a playoff team with Josh McCown or Ryan Fitzpatrick lol. We’ve really gone full Huddle now.

Are you saying that when we were 6-2, and Cam clearly couldn't play, that playing a veteran backup QB wouldn't have given us a shot at the playoffs?

Like no chance at all?

We all know Rons reluctance to play younger players, do you think that Ron's refusal to bench Cam had anything to do with neither of the backup QB's having ever thrown NFL passes?

Best is DJ Moore hands down. That draft was pretty good. That year I think was pretty good except not having an immediate viable backup plan to Cam Newton.

this year has been a total disaster. The draft is a wasted year almost entirely with the jury 50/50 on Burns Miller and Daley. Bruce Irvin and Gerald McCoy have been the only bright spots at FA.

we had such high hopes. Cam was back, we got Gerald McCoy, Bruce Irvin and company, new defensive fronts.

what a total epic Browns style let down.

He got joe but also failed miserably at drafting anyone outside of him even when the browns regularly picked in the top 10, apples to oranges

So you’re talking about last year now? Cause you specifically mentioned Fitzpatrick who didn’t even make it to FA prior to that season, nor did McCown...both signed extensions with their respective teams before FA started.

But to answer your question: do I think Ron would have benched Cam at 6-2 for Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh McCown? Is that a serious question? Hell no...even in our next 3 losses, Cam had a 76% completion rate, 881 yards, 9 TDs, and 3 Interceptions...he could clearly still play, despite his shoulder issues. You think Ron would’ve thought Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh McCown, or whichever journeyman bum vet QB would give us the best chance to win over Cam? He only shut Cam down after our season was virtually over.
