Hurney 2.0 - The Best and The Worst moves

When Hurney was named "interim GM" and placed in charge of "finding a new GM" we all knew it was a ruse. No legitimate search ever happened. Jerry Richardson's long time friend was back in the saddle.

Fast forward two and a half years, what has been HurnDogs' best and worst moves as GM?

My opinion:

The Best

Drafting DJ Moore. Moore has grown leaps and bounds this season and is now among the top tier receivers in the league. Hurney could always be relied on to select a solid first round pick.

Drafting Dennis Daley, a sixth round pick that will likely end up being the franchise left tackle for years to come. That right there is NFL gold.

Signed Julius Peppers to 1 year contract. Seeing Julius back home for a season was a thing of beauty.

The Worst

Chose Gano over Butker. So many of us saw this as a huge mistake and called him out on it immediately. It made no sense at the time, and it still doesn't. To make matters worse he kept two kickers on the roster for a long while and got nothing out of it.

Drafted Rashaan Gaulden in round three. Classic Hurney here. Ignore the scouts and go with your gut. Gaulden never had a chance of making any impact on the team and wasn't cut his rookie year only because he was a mistake of a third round draft pick.

Failed to address backup QB adequately. When Cam's shoulder gave out in 2018 it was clear to anyone paying attention that his 2019 season would be in doubt. A serious backup plan was needed, but never made. Kyle Allen and Will Grier aren't QBs of a team that you expect to win this season. Fail. Fail. Fail.

I know I am probably missing some. What are some more best and worsts?

I don’t disagree with any of that. I also think it’s still remarkably odd that he’s back with the football team. We’re all kind of numb to it right now, but he just waltzed right back in. For those who been around long enough to remember the end of the John Fox era, you probably understand why it’s so perplexing that he ever made it back into a GM role, particularly with the same franchise.

I’m as ready as anybody for this regime to go, but one thing I’ve wondered: what else could Hurney have done with the OL in the off-season? Paradis was the best available FA C and no one expected him to be so awful.

Daryl Williams at one time was a Pro Bowler. A one-year rental had many on here excited in July.

I wouldn’t have traded up for Greg Little, I’ll say that.

Brian Burns is a future perennial pro bowler and all world talent at the 2nd most important position in the NFL, and this was clear to all before his wrist injury.

DJ Moore (4th in the NFL in receiving yards) at 24, and Brian Burns at 16

Both late 1st round picks and pro bowl talents at positions we've been desperate to replace for half a decade.

I'm not ready to say this yet. Yes, he looked great. Since then he has had two injuries that has caused him to miss playing time.

I can forgive the backup qb situation. I think they tried. It wasn’t a complete fail. Saints did well in this regard, probably got lucky, but they also have a lot of really high powered offensive pieces.

kyle Allen isn’t a complete flop. He is giving his best shot, is focused and plays well. Mistakes have been costly but it’s not all on him.

Yeah, I hope he doesn't become injury prone. Although, one injury could have been avoided with a cooler head, but that will come with experience.
