Possible 2020 Cap Casualties

I’d see how paradis does during next tc before considering cutting him just yet, especially under a new coaching staff.

not many tough decision imo, the cam situation is a no brainer if healthy, and the only guys I’d prioritize signing back are bradberry, McCoy and Boston. Everyone else is depth or shouldn’t really sign back.

DO NOT RESTRUCTURE KK! That contract is already bad as is. Same with Trai. Luke is an interesting situation. Do we extend him for a few more seasons similar to Seattle and Wagner did (big cap number) or do we let him play out his age 30 season and move on? Burns is likely the future of this D. Does the future staff think Burns can work in a 4-3 or Luke in a 3-4?

As for cuts, I hope Olsen retires. He’s my favorite Panther and I see no way he is on the team next year with his cap number and a new GM. Maybe he would accept a pay cut (doubtful). Cut Poe, too much money and he’s coming off a bad injury. Sign or draft his replacement. Cut Gano, draft replacement. Cut Moncrief and Davis. Wright can go either way with me.

Now for who to bring back. Re-sign Bradberry, although I’m hesitant to give him elite CB money. He’s very good but I don’t find him elite. Shaq can walk. Too inconsistent to pay big bucks. I rather have a legitimate thumper next to Luke if we stay 3-4. Addison and Irvin I would like back but they are getting long in the tooth. Maybe as situational rushers at a reduced rate to keep everyone fresh. This is a position I would spend significant cap to get a bonafide OLB/DE if one is available. Same as above with McCoy. Boston I would bring back for the same deal if we can’t find anything else. Butler can walk.

I'm gonna barf but is it worth it to shop luke for a pick if we stick with the 3-4? He is clearly out of place and frankly, I think we can get a first or second for him right now with the contract remaining.

Luke is not the one out of place. You’re thinking of the DL and Shaq. Luke has to cover his ground and theirs while getting more attention from interior linemen. I really wish people would quit ragging on him. It’s foolish.

We are going to have needs at DB (FS + depth), DL (NT + depth), and iOL (starting LG + C + depth) going into the offseason at the very least.

However, if we cut Poe, Olsen, Davis, Wright, and Moncrief that gives the team a total of nearly $70M in cap space (including what was already available). I feel much, much better having that to play with going into the offseason while we wait for word on Cam's health. That should be enough to retain Bradberry & Shaq + restock the aforementioned positions.

People aren't going to want to hear it but I think CMC will be gone eventually too. Either when his rookie deal expires or he demands a new contract. Analytics doesn't value runningbacks and he's always been destined to be a Bronco eventually.

That bill is coming in this off-season. Just like Zeke and Gurley, this is when they have the most leverage. Because if you’re not building around him, how much of a commitment do you make to a top RB?

Yeah, but can CMC identify as a receiver? I know he's listed as a running back, but when you lead the team in receptions you have a good argument.

Not going anywhere anytime soon:
Cam

Explain how on earth Cam Newton stays on this team at his salary when he likely won't be recovered from foot surgery, let alone running around on a football field, until April-May?

You think if Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm, Justin Herbert or Jacob Eason are sitting on the board Carolina will take a pass, smile and give a thumbs up to Cam, who is watching from home with his foot in a boot?

It's all just throwing darts in the dark until we hire a new coaching staff and fully flesh out the revised front office.  We have no idea, we just see numbers and go "Oh, that's an easy decision".  That's not how it works, certainly in the more analytical methods that Tepper wants to see from his organization.

In the analytics model, they aren't just looking at our team.  They are looking at every player on every team and doing comparisons.  For example, how does Jarius Wright's production compare to other WR's around the league who are making approximately the same money?  That's the sort of discussion the analytics method loves.

The really hard part of analytics as it applies to football is line play.  It's really tough to put numbers on it.  Line play is almost universally the "Mark one eyeball" test.  Even then, to properly analyze line play, you need to know exactly what play was called and what each lineman was assigned to do on the play.

The good news however is that we aren't in cap hell.

His salary is a bargain for starting QBs. He has one year remaining under contract, and a whole lot to prove to not only himself but a lot of people. Either he comes back next year and proves it, and everyone is happy. Or he doesn't, and everyone moves on.

I'm not sold on any QB in this draft yet. In fact, we don't even know who they all are yet.

But we can also basically hold Kyle Allen hostage. We have Will Grier. Nobody knows what the FA market at QB will look like yet.

The only logical conclusion is that we'll wait until March/April and see.

Very valid point.

And salaries for WRs (top 10 league average: $16M) are twice what they are for RBs (top 10 league average $8M). And the RB salary number is all fugged up because the Cowboys are paying Zeke $15M a year and Gurley is close behind.
