Ron Rivera and our Love/Hate relationship

Ron has had me torn from the beginning, because as a person I love that dude. You can tell he genuinely cares about this franchise and those involved in those conversations. Why do you think Ron was always so uncomfortable talking about Cam Newton? He believes in his guy 100%. And to be questioned on faith and decision making he gets flustered. And that's what makes it hard because it makes it so personal.

See Ron reminds me of my ex. When I say when it was good, man I'm telling you it was great. Times I will never forget.  She had an ass that was as sweet as a freshly picked peach.
But I was blinded by the fact that those times  we had long since diminished and we bogged down into the daily grind of life. Next thing I know, there were constant petty disagreements that led to some resentment and eventually complete and utter failure. Our relationship slowly began to fade because our lack of appreciation of one another. We stopped paying attention to what we surrounded ourselves with and became primarily focused on our own well being. And this is how it relates to Ron...

And bear with me, love and hate, I hear are very strong words. So it warrants an explanation. Those who don't like to read and write, stop here. This is purgatory. The place between heaven and hell, where souls who are not saved nor ascending reside. Repent now before it's to late and save yourself from the suffering.

Anyway,

As I was saying,

2011-2012

The first two years of Ron's career in Carolina were filled with promise, and growth. But as we all know early on in any relationship it can be Rocky. You're still feeling each other out, testing boundaries seeing how far you can go. It's filled with its ups and downs and the occasional stomach aches from holding in a fart but the overall outlook feels good. The right pieces are there so to speak.

Cam and Ron started their NFL careers together in a sense of being in leadership role of a football team. So it was fresh, new and exciting. Ron had a mega talent at qb, with a huge ego, and all Ron had to do was put together a defense. I would argue two years is a little long for the feel it out period, but hey what the heck! Fast forward to the year 2013.

12-4 after a slow start. Ron sees it. New GM helps get His plan working, yet he comes up short when His offense fails to pick it up. Nonetheless, he's optimistic every season to this point has lead to another win, another milestone passed. He's progressing. A few changes and we are golden. Perennial contender. Man that pass rush with a pyschopathic assassin at DE, add in a QB at MLB that sees the field better than Ron EVER COULD, was pure entertainment. That was one of the best defenses Ron has ever put on a field. Still he came up short of the goal.

2014-2015

Following a strong showing, feeling optimistic we go into the next year with high hopes but something ain't clicking. It's just an odd year in the division, we make the playoffs win a game then get bounced when we face an actual contender. Once again our offense let us down, and injuries and bad drafting left holes in Ron's defense. But still pulled out a division title, and a divisional round appearance. We're still in the talks. A few more moves go our way and we must be on the cusp of our 2nd Superbowl appearance. And we were right.

That very next season near perfection occurred that moment when all things are working towards your favor, the stars have aligned, the sun has entered the 10th house of Capricorn or whatever those tards that believe in that poo say. We've made it. Best season in Franchise history. We still didn't win that ring we so covet, but we got close. And this where it gets Rocky.

2016 to present more of the same. Missed opportunities. Most of us feel if we heard Ron quote missed opportunities again as a reason for the losses, we may just nose dive in a shark tank filled with great whites while covered in blood. I would rather die than hear that man say missed opportunities again. That is simply no execuse. Ron seemed to become complacent. We've had one winning season during this time frame and got swept by the dirtiest franchise in NFL history, whom also resides in our division and in that 3 game series they effectively ended hopes of anymore playoff magic.

Which leads me all the way back to my point. My love hate relationship with and how it weirdly relates to my ex. So I'll let Sir Charles Dickens explain a little further, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” and man do those words ring true.

Just like my last relationship Ron's time here has been a roller coaster ride of constant build up leading to a stomach curdling drop off. Followed by consistent flailing until arriving at the start to do it all over again. If for whatever reason I decided to go back to her and entirely likely to result in the same ending is so enticing to me, because you crave that feeling again. The greatness of it all. But you know deep down there is what could be a fatal disconnect, because you both become so enamoured with your own survival that you lose track of what's most important and that is the longevity. The consistency, the knowing that as long as you work together you can overcome. And based on the patterns of Ron's current track record one would say we are due for a winning season. So should we stay? Or just let it go.

That is why me and Ron have a love hate relationship. Because just like my ex, I can see the potential and it's ever so tempting but deep down I know that eventually there will be a downfall. But also just like her she resorts to selfishness when trying to survive in her role, Ron too chooses himself. And some would argue his handling of The Cameron Newton is a prime example. Also, Ron is extremely transparent about his ideas in football. He's old school. Ball control offense, with a very stingy D. And the comparison to my ex is now becoming far to awkward. Because Ron lacks innovation or the wherewithal to surround him with people who do. My ex was the same, while she was drop dead gorgeous and had the basics, she left some to be desired in creativity. I'll let your minds wonder with that one because I promise I could give vivid details. And that's why I said it's awkward.

But I said all that to ask you fellow huddlers this, is she worth one more season or should we cut that bish off.

And by her I mean Ron, asking for a friend...

what say you huddle?

The quote exemplifies false hope but I believe panthers hope is real. I believe  the decision on Ron is not as significant as you may think, because the players are ones on the field and because we need to get lucky with the next coach.

Why is the hope real?  Last season without healthy Cam we had a big losing streak and this season without Cam we managed to do ok.  With healthy Cam we would rip through this schedule.  With improved Allen we would also rip through this schedule.  Just needed 1 yard 1 play so many times against a tough competition.

Sometimes, it’s just time for a change. It doesn’t mean you have to hate the guy, it doesn’t mean that you have to crap on his accomplishments. I applaud him for the achievements, and I’ve been hard on him for his flaws. Overall, I thought it was time for a change after last season. Nothing has changed my mind thus far.

I think most people here would agree that Ron is a great person, and you can tell by how the players talk that they truly respect him. But he’s been in Charlotte for almost a decade. and it seems like it’s time for a change. I really don’t believe that the Panthers will improve as a team if Ron and Co are retained

    • They can’t reasonably fire a rookie head coach who was saddled with one of the worst first overall QBs of all time. And at times made said QB look decent to serviceable.  If the team was 3-11 at this point next season, fire everyone.
