Interesting Stat on DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel

I don't hate him. I hate that 4 1000 yd receivers were drafted after him. I hate that we've seen 3 injury plagued meh seasons from him and that it's become Kyle Allen's fault all of a sudden. He has failed because he is undersized, and was never a great route runner. The fact that his numbers could be better if he played for the Ravens are completely irrelevant to whether he was a great selection for us. Because we aren't the Ravens

I wasn't arguing whether he was a great selection.  I just see the larger issue being we suck at developing receivers and our qb has been injured.  Who was our last receiver that anyone considered a good route runner?  SS?  Moose?

Curtis Samuel’s catchable is different from an actual professional receiver. He is only going to catch it if no one is around him to contest the pass. Similar to our old friend Funchess.

Bull crap. I’ve seen Funchess moss dbs for touchdowns. Samuel is a weak biatch who flops fighting for 50/50 balls

I love these "Curtis is actually good and it's all Kyle Allen's fault threads". As though his stats were so much better with Cam. He's not a receiver. He's an exceptionally fast RB lining up at WR. By the time the huddle is willing to accept that he was actually way over drafted he will be long forgotten. Anyone who thinks this guy has a 1000 yard season in him is deluding themselves. Godwin, Juju, Kupp, Golladay all drafted after him.

You really think he couldnt put up 1000 yards if he was on the Chiefs?

look up Steve Smiths stats in 2010 with the dogshit QBs we had and then look up his 2011 stats with Cam and try to say QB play doesnt play arguably the biggest factor in receiver production

Those expecting to see Samuel blossom into a legit, every down NFL WR are very likely going to be sorely disappointed. He's a gadget player. Using him in various ways(running, catching short passes and running after the catch) is what will make him the most useful. But the idea that he will eventually be a #1, #2 or even #3 WR is unlikely.

He wasn't a WR in college, and it's pretty obvious why. It doesn't make him useless, we just need to try and use him in ways to help make him more successful. We did more of that in the NO game.

I'd have to look at the numbers, but Curtis does run deeper routes which requires the QB to have more touch on the passes.  DJ runs shallower, underneath routes where the QB isn't required to throw passes with pin-point accuracy just in the catch radius.  I don't care who you are, it's tougher to hit a target 20+ yards down field running away from you than hitting a target 10 yards away cutting across your face.  Certain QBs are gifted in that regard and have an exceptional touch on the deep ball.  Not slamming our QBs, but they struggle with it, though admittedly it's far from easy.

Samuel does probably run more deep routes, but he showed Sunday his problems arent all about Allen.  He seems to body catch too much.

True as he's still grasping to be a "hands" catcher.  The guy is just 23 years old and changing positions from what he played in college.  Look, there have been numerous examples of players changing form their college positions to WR and been successful.  Heck, Chris Hogan played lacrosse in college and made it as a NFL WR.   You all need a little more patience with Samuel.  Remember, he missed a lot of time his first two seasons with injury.  The guy is still a work in progress, not a bad one at that for a #2 guy.

I didn't put all the blame on Allen or Cam, but if you look at OP, it clearly states that on 21% of deep balls are able to be caught.  Some of the missed opportunities are on the QB and some on Samuel, but this notion Curtis sucks is just laughable.

i'm with kungfudude.  he's not a good wr.   he's a gadget player that can be dangerous.  he's not going to suddenly learn body control and the ability to fight off a defender for the ball.  he's not going to learn how not to get pushed around and abused.  i don't know how smitty did it at his size.  maybe his bones are adamantium, but samuels are feathers.  and i agree with electro'shorse about him being asked to play to his weaknesses.   we need a real #2 and curtis needs to be a wrinkle that helps everyone else.  (honestly i'd like to have a #1 with dj at #2 but maybe dj can become that guy)

Curtis' stats have gotten better in each year.  In two fewer games (only played in 13 last year due to injury) he already has more first downs and tied his catch total.  He only has about 20 yards to eclipse last season's total and one more TD to tie last season.  He's getting better, but some of you are expecting Rome to be built in a day with this kid

I think "sucks" is too strong for sure.  I don't think he is a very good #2, frankly, because I just don't seem as reliable, and has really had some problem with drops this year so far (>6% :( )... but he has a ton of dynamic ability once the ball is in his hands that makes him a valuable member of the team and one that will hopefully improve with experience.

It is his third year in the league, at this point if you haven't "made it" it would be less likely that the light suddenly comes on. It's not that big of a deal other than him being overdrafted. He can still help the team until his contract expires.
