Coaching and GM Candidates (Broad List)

Shoot, I wouldn't be mad at that Combo. The only thing I'd "gripe" about is  Colberts age, but even then, he has a great track record and knows talent when he sees it.

Is it bad to be fantasizing over possible GM/Coaches before the season ends?

I've pondered Colbert as possibly a temporary GM or maybe even a consultant.

You bring him aboard just long enough to rearrange the Panthers football operations in the mold of the Steelers, then have him name his successor and retire.

Again, anything's possible.

A 100% healthy Newton won't run like a younger Newton or Jackson or young Kaepernic no matter what though. He would need to create something for 2020 Cam and not just try to mimic this season with the Ravens.

Another thing to consider is how do these guys translate from coordinator to head coach.  Their ability to catch lighting in a bottle with one set of circumstances with half the team (or a third) is different than steering a ship.

im a huge fan of toub, our special teams are notoriously shitty, especially in the return game and this year with gano hurt kicking's been rough too. not only would he fix that up, he could probably bring over a lot of assistants from KC to help run the offense. the only real question with toub is the defense, since KC is a 3-4, and our 3-4 experiment has predictably been a disaster since we have personnel for a 4-3.

Posted this last night, and I stand by it. I think it would be fascinating, particularly if Cam returns.

With Roman, you're likely talking about a West Coast Offense.

McCaffrey and Moore could certainly fit in that attack, but I think you'd probably be looking at a lot of retooling outside of that, especially on the line.

(granted, some folks would suggest that needs to be done anyway)

To those saying Saleh, I got to ask you this...

Does one good season really make him a great candidate? To me, I'd be afraid to hire a guy that doesn't have a lot of resume under them.

Also, I know there will be folks clamoring for Lincoln Riley (because he is the cool, young, hip, college coach that everyone loves and hopes he comes to the NFL) but let's be real here... What has been the success rate for college coaches transitioning from college to NFL? Not very good and more so then not, they end up back in the college ranks. So I will pass on Lincoln.

That said, my top favorite right now would be Greg Roman

Also, a couple of darkhorse candidates that wasn't on the list would be:

Don "Wink" Martindale (Baltimore Ravens, DC) - This dude has put together a great defense in Baltimore this year and if we really plan on sticking with the 3-4 defense, he could really bring a more aggressive scheme because the Ravens love bringing the pressure.

Kris Richard (Dallas Cowboys, DC) -  I know the Cowboys have struggled a little (and there are talks of Jason Garrett on the way out) but let's not take away from Richard. He reminds me a little like Mike Tomlin in a way he coaches and teaches and plus, he is very fiery. I can see him bringing in someone young at OC.

Humans, i.e. homo sapiens, in this particular case those who follow football and like to speculate on possible future events.

I'm one of them, in this case. That thought has crossed my mind.

Oh you just mean fans. Yeah, probably just you to be honest. I highly doubt anyone else would draw that line.

Also reporters (technically also humans).

I figure as soon as Roman gets a head coaching job (which I believe he will) someone will be quick to ask him "Sooo, ummm..."

Wouldn't exactly surprise me for someone's agent to make that connection as well.

Honestly, i'd be weary of using Cam that way anyway. He's already been beaten down so many years. Going to that offense where Jackson does so much rushing...if we had 21 YO Cam. Sure. I'd like to see that type of offense but only in situational events. When you know you need 1 yard. Cam is automatic in those situations and I can't remember when he's been stopped. If Roman comes here but utilizes the threat of Cam, basically balancing his ability as a runner but not exploiting it to the point where Cam will break down again, and incorporate CMC, Moore, and future weapons. I'm all for it.

I'd hate to see Cam get broken down again.

I have Richard listed, but none of the articles I looked up mentioned Martindale.

Granted, it's possible. These in-season articles invariably miss somebody.

Eh, possibly. I don't think it will be that often. TBH, I think the NFL successfully muddied the waters enough in their Kaep PR stunt that he probably won't show up on an NFL team radar again.

    • Every once in a while a guy gets released just before his injury history clears up.  I think he's worth kicking the tires on.
    • I Would rather keep Xavier Woods and draft one or sign another aging vet. That would be adequate if we revamp everything else on def - which is what we should be doing.
