When did I say that 2015 Cam Newton was the goal?

You talked about "a player of Cam's caliber". My point is I don't think that player exists anymore, especially not if Igo is right about his shoulder (and there's evidence that he may well be).

Bottom line: The prospect of Newton returning to the kind of form he had before is very much in doubt. And any future strategy that counts on that happening is going to be extremely risky.

Worth noting that that's basically what we did this season. Look what happened.

Charlotte is home.. But not on a one year lame duck contract. I think he'd sit out before he did that and jeopardized his health and future earnings

Has he said anything about sitting out?  I dont see it.  He’s not some young guy about to get his first deal.  He’s set for life.  IMO if he comes back its not for the money he will make in 2020. It will be a redemption year

Okay, so Cam has said "he wants to stay in Charlotte", that is phase one.

Next, look for him to be convincing on social media that he is strong and okay and looking forward to next season and making doubters pay.

Then ask yourself, if he says this, is he speaking to the Panthers brass, (who would already know it) or auditioning, per instructions from his agent, for his next gig?

If Cam is able to return to 90% of what he was in 2015 he would be the toast of the town in Chicago.

And Panther brass would probably have him signed to extension already, if they thought that possible.  Or at least I would

Word was that Tepper wasn't convinced of that at the time he bought the team.

If he didn't see it back then, it's hard to buy that he'd believe it now.

If Cam has another shoulder surgery, then I think he might end up retiring.

I doubt any team is going to sign him in "HOPES" that this surgery fixed the weakness that the last surgery did not.  His foot should be fine, but QB's have to have their arms in good order.

If he has surgery, I see the Panthers letting him go right before FA.  This gives him ample opportunity to try to convince a new team to sign him or, lets him consider his options.

You could make a pretty good argument that's how the Patriots win.

christ maybe this year, but you are talking about the back end of a player that many consider the greatest of all time.  The Patriots have dominated for more than a decade because of excellent coaching and great quarterback play.   To diminish Tom Brady's accomplishments is ridiculous IMO.

I'm not. Again, this is a question of skill vs style.

The way the Patriots have always run their offense is to use Brady primarily as a distributor, and it works.

Problem is, the 2020 Panthers will likely be in rebuild mode with a litany of issues, not the least of which is a porous O-line and no # 88.

Not a good situation for any QB, but even less so for one coming off of major injuries on the back half of his career.

Just seems to me that Chicago needs an upgrade at QB and Cam needs an upgrade in his supporting cast.

Match made in heaven for both parties looking to make it back to the big dance.

What does Chicago have to offer for him? They went all on in Mitch trubisky and Khalil Mack. Are we just supposed to give them Cam for free because they need a QB?

You are putting a lot into your statement that I never even suggested.

This is about what Cam wants.

If Newton stays in Carolina for 2020 there is a good chance his most reliable receiver will have retired.  There is also that small issue of a horrible O-line that will likely get him killed and a coaching staff that will stand by and let it happen.

If Cam wants to survive long enough in the NFL to hoist a Lombardi Trophy over his head, chances are his chances are better in Chicago than Carolina.
