Panthers at Saints - Risers and Fallers

Hate to say it, but Kuechly and Shaq combined for a total of 13 tackles yesterday. This is a weekly saga of both of them getting caught out of position and looking lost in the defensive realignment brainchild of Ron Rivera.

Anyone notice, while bashing Eric Reid, that he led the team with 15 tackles (11 solo) yesterday? Gee, could that be the result of Luke and Shaq getting mauled by O-linemen easily getting to the second level, leaving no one but Boston or Reid to end the play.

Latavius Murray: 9 YPC average; Kamara: 5 YPC average.

Or it could be he was tackling the guy who just abused him in coverage. How many of those tackles were Jared Cook 20 yds downfield?

Every DB looks good rushing the passer or coming on a run blitz unblocked. Even Munnerlyn looked good doing it.

Reid has to stop playing safety for the Panthers.  I'd be fine with trying him at linebacker, because he's good against the run, but we have to go get a real safety who can cover the deep 3rd.

Or, if you're fine with Brees and Matt Ryan continuing to have their way with us, keep trotting him out at safety.

Yep. Something I pounded the table for all off-season.

Several good points about Reid above. There is much to really like about his play. But Saints and Falcons definitely know how to exploit his weaknesses in coverage, and you've got to be able to win in your division.

On the O line, it's definitely hard to know who we can build around. I think Moton, Daley and GVR can all be solid guys. Trai too. The fact that we've had so many Oline combos / injuries / shuffling this year has really hurt. Hard to know what to say about Paradis. He's not looked good, but definitely coaching could be a big part of that.

Is it time for Matsko to go?

The 3-4 thing is idiodic.  Uncovered guards are reaching Luke and Shaq and washing them out of the play.  It's a complete mismanagement of personnel by Rivera.

As for Reid, yes, he's a good run defender (although it's also common to see him miss tackles, as well).   He just shouldn't be playing defensive back in the NFL.  He needs to follow the same track that Mark Barron or Deone Buchanan followed, but I'd rather just cut him and move on, since Shaq already fits that hybrid mold.

lame. he's a little lead-footed in pass pro at times but has great instincts and plays the run well. his fourth down penetration for the stop was as clutch as they come.

This, that could have been a game winning play if we could have gotten a TD off that turnover(or not miss the FG)

That was kind of my point. Or how many of those tackles were Murray or Kamara getting deep into the secondary?

But it puts on clear display the problem with this defense. Where Luke and Shaq would normally be making 8-10 tackles per game each, they're no longer getting it done, which leaves it up to the safeties. And if you have safeties struggling in pass coverage already, it only makes it easier when they also have to account for a Latavius Murray averaging 9 yards a carry or Kamara at 5 yards a pop and the LBs are not making those tackles.

Reid has been leading us for a while, which is definitely not a good thing. It means that plays are getting back to him and that he is having to account for an inordinate amount of the tackling in the secondary.

Luke is covering for Shaq.  I will say Luke has not played his football this year but this is his first year without his running mate and he didn't have to watch out for DT as he has done for Shaq this year.  Why Luke is getting out of position many times.  Shaq has been playing here for 5 years now.  He isn't having one of those FA years and shouldn't get a huge contact after the end of the year and maybe allowed to walk.

Slye is a faller to a degree I didn't think possible. Which is really a shame, because I had high hopes for the kid. He's got a hell of a leg, but the worst, most unforgivable thing an NFL kicker can be is inconsistent. How you go from nailing a 52-yarder that would have gone right down the center from 65 yards, and then miss 3 chip shots, I just can't imagine.

Maybe it was BECAUSE of the two misses that he missed the third. Like those days when your golf swing just isn't working, so you try to correct the problem you're experiencing in the teebox, "Well I sliced my first two drives, so maybe if I close my clubface a little more..."

But then all you're really doing is reinforcing a bad technique. Bad technique I can forgive, but the problem that I think will be the end of his career is if he's making those kinds of mental adjustments when he's setting up to kick, it means he gets too in his own head when he needs to be clearing his head, and just trust his ability. That spells disaster, and is a lot harder to correct.

I'd like to see him bounce back, but I honestly think he'll wear the psychological scars of this performance for the rest of the season at least.

I too wouldn't be surprised if he's cut this week for a guy off the streets. You can't cost the team a game when you're on the playoff bubble and hope to keep your job.

based off the last couple (not letting one game drastically swing it).

Risers

DJ Moore, Boston

Fallers

Reid, Slye (contradicting myself a tad by not letting one game hold too much weight but 3 chip shot/XPs is just too brutal)

One 4th down stop doesn't make up for the Saints abusing him all day in pass coverage.  I won't say he's a bum.  But he's not really a positive.  Just a dude.

Panthers knew when they signed him he’s not good against the pass... he’s strictly an in the box safety

    • If my reply comes off argumentative, that is not my intention so please don’t take it as such.  You said one word, probably subconsciously, in your post that immediately disqualifies him from being a QB in the NFL. You actually said it twice. Kid. It’s exactly how you see him, and exactly how the rest of the entire NFL sees him as well.  Yes, he is a kid, he looks and acts like a kid and that exactly IS the problem. The NFL is for grown ass men. Period. Hell, our kicker looks like he collects ‘taxes’ as a side hustle. These are straight dudes. Men.  Nothing in his persona changed from last year to this.  Nothing in his physical stature. Nothing. He has shown 0 development. 0. And he disrespects the entire organization, talking video games and Netflix in the offseason. Bro. Really. My man Chuba is busting his ass to look good for his second contract. Set himself up for life. How many RBs make it to even sign contract #3? First 2 games he has to run in to a brick wall continuously because Netflix can’t even get it over the LOS.  He’s a kid who pulled off the biggest heist in world history. He looks happier on the sideline goofing around than he ever has looked on the field. It’s time to cut bait.
    • I hear you and I can imagine it's frustrating as a fan, but UNC-CH leaving the ACC would be throwing away over a century of history. It would really suck if y'all, or Clemson, or any of the other remaining charter members leave. I still think it sucks that Maryland left as well. Feels so wrong not having that rivalry anymore. Maryland fuging hated us and I loved it. Who's Maryland's rival now in the big 10? Rutgers? lol. Also, I think that the Heels are more likely to be Kentucky 2.0 than you are to get serious about football upon joining the SEC. Both UNC (and also Duke's) administrations seem very stuck in their ways with sticking to their ways and remaining basketball powerhouses. I do wish we could see NC teams actually competing in my favorite sport sometimes but alas. I personally value keeping our history intact over trying to become top flight CFB programs because nowadays it's just a pay to win sport anyways. Even if UNC-CH got serious I doubt they could compete with that Texas oil money, or that Oregon nike money, or that USC rich kid money. That's all top level college football really is anymore. You're either an established blue blood or you're willing to waste tons of money that could be spent on education rather than football.
    • Maybe a move to the SEC forces UNC to be more serious about football?   I mean we should be making noise in the weak ACC and we can't even do that. How is Duke better than UNC in football right now? It's honestly sad and pathetic.   It doesn't matter if we get another great QB as you said a QB doesn't mean you have a great roster. A QB can only do so much. We lack elite guys in the trenches. That's how you build a program. It starts up front.
