About Rivera and Tepper...

First off, as I posted last week, I fully expect Rivera to be fired at the end of the season. What is done is done and this season will be Rivera's last.

This Post is about why he wasn't fired after last season and why he won't be fired till after the end of the season.

To better explain this I will go about this in a Q/A style.

Q: Why wasn't Rivera fired after last season?

A: Make no mistake, Rivera's days as the Panthers head coach were numbered the moment David Tepper bought the team. But any time you take over a business you don't walk into the door and immediately fire everyone. You watch and wait, you want to figure out the basics of team operations first before you start firing entire coaching staffs and GM's.   Tepper has been putting together his vision for the Panthers going forward we have all read and seen his plans for a new team HQ and practice facility. We have heard about his plans to build a new stadium. He is putting his plan together slowly and surely he will get it eventually.  As the saying goes Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will the Panthers be rebuilt in a single year.  At the time Tepper took over the Panthers, we had a Star Franchise QB in Cam Newton, and whether many of you believe it or not as of the end of the season in 2017 Rivera was #5 in the NFL among active head coaches in wins since he came into the league(posted about this last year early last season).  There was no rush to fire a head coach with that track record until he has given you a reason too(which now he has).  Expect Tepper to put phase 2 in team reorganization at the end of the season, by hiring a new GM and Coach.  He will let the new coach and GM decide the fate of Cam Newton.

Q: So if Rivera and Hurney are already good as gone, why not fire them now?

A: Simply put, to the benefit of what? There is no need to fire a head coach before you start looking for a new one or a GM for that matter.  The most qualified person to be HC behind Rivera is Norv Turner who has already been on the record of saying he does not wish to be a HC again in the NFL. Firing Rivera today or Tomorrow accomplishes nothing more than satisfying a few fans who will simple begin to complain about something else next. There is no reason to take any action that does not benefit the team, and for that reason Rivera and Hurney will not be fired till the end of the season.

Expect Phase 2 of the Panthers reorganization under Tepper to begin at the end of the season. Until then as I said last week, just watch the game to evaluate what players we may keep and which ones may need to go and enjoy the game, wins or losses in the grand scheme of things mean nothing right now.

Just now, Mr. Scot said:

I've said it before, but I'll say it again:

I still feel like I'm watching Jerry Richardson's Panthers.

I won't feel like I'm watching a new Panthers team until the guys that Jerry Richardson left in charge are gone.

Soon friend, very soon. just about 2 more months to go.

I have to disagree with the thought that Tepper couldn’t just simply fire people after last year. Tepper said he hates long term mediocrity, I’m sure he took his time in researching both Ron and Marty among others as well. He saw clearly that the team is a very mediocre 29-30 since 2015.

I would’ve had zero problem with Tepper beginning the cleansing last year

According to beat reporters Tepper really likes Hurney, so for all of you that are expecting him to get fired, I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Only a fool lets the other players know his hand in a game of poker, same reason you here players put out false information around the Draft all the time. I'll be shocked if Tepper doesn't hire his own GM and Coach.

With that said though Hurney's biggest issue as a GM wasnt his talent evaluations or the draft, it was his salary cap management by overpaying players for sentimental reasons. You'd be hard pressed to find a more successful GM in the NFL as far as drafting goes and he has always been decent in FA signings.

Lets not Forget, Hurney had more to do with Gettlemans success than DG, Hurney drafted all the core players and DG road the coat tails of that. DG was just better at salary cap management and finding mid tier FA's. DG was Hot garbage in drafts outside of his first.

But was Tepper ready? I dont think he was. he had not owned the team a full year yet, or watch what would be a normal full offseason for a team.
