Defense (It’s not the 3-4 or 4-3)

Everyone is asking what’s wrong with the defense. Last year we thought it was the 4-3 and aging players. This year some people are blaming the 3-4, the 4-3, Kuechly, etc... 

I’ve heard Rivera use the phrase “gap responsible defense” where every player in the front 7 is assigned a gap in run defense. 

This is where the problems are stemming from. Kuechly and Thompson are being assigned 1 single gap to play, instead of being free flowing sideline to sideline LBs which they do best. There job in run support is practically the same as the DTs. Essentially if the other team is able to break through our front line, there is nobody there in that next level to help stop the run since Kuechly and Thompson have already filled their gap somewhere else. 

IMO this is where our problems on defense have stemmed from and I hate seeing our best years of Luke being wasted with him being a glorified defensive tackle. 

Feel free to add on or disagree with me but this is what I’ve been seeing and hearing from Rivera about our defense and it’s just hard to watch on the field.

What they’re asking 59 and 54 to do this year is ridiculously stupid.

One thing that has to be mentioned this team has had an unbelievable amount of injuries this season.  Its been pretty crazy.

Yes, injuries never help. Lattimore was out for the Saints today, and it definitely affected them.
