I know it's depressing, but lets talk about draft eligible QBs

Nah, don't undersell Herbert at all. He is the closest thing to a Wentz/Luck type prospect that you can get.

Wentz is a fair comparison, don't oversell with Luck though.  Biggest knocks I've seen on Herbert are durability, progressions and composure under pressure.  Herbert looked good against the best defenses he's faced this year (Auburn and Cal).  He needs to play Utah in the conference championship, that could be another chance to showcase against NFL prospects.

since o-lines seem to be getting harder and harder to come by i think we need someone mobile. tua or jalen, then burrow or herbert.  if tua falls to us i think we'll be set for a long time.  i like jalen too because he's thick.   the days of having a qb for 12-15 years may be ending for the most part because the o-line situation may not be fixable.  according to the ex players i heard yesterday they don't get to practice enough to hone their techniques.    i have no idea about eason or love so i can't comment on either.

Being elusive, taking small steps up or to the side is more effective in the long term than being mobile. The best QBs avoid sacks by taking those one or two steps.

If everything went south for the QBs on the roster, I want Herbert, even if we have to trade up for him. He has a great arm and is very accurate. The thing is we have enough talent to keep us from being a top 5 selection team for years and can't afford to simply take what's at our spot. Package picks and let the new era begin.

Because Grier was a 3rd round pick and was probably over drafted even at that spot, on top of the fact that the regime that drafted him is all but assured to be gone.

Exactly....a 3rd rounder is expendable at any position if a better option is available in the next draft, especially a player who never even saw the field. Also he could still just be the backup...was an odd question. You can justify drafting a QB in every draft.

Honestly, I don't see us drafting another QB until around 4th or 5th round. You saw what happened with Will Grier; used a 3rd round pick for the guy & he's still nothing more than a project. Though one whole offseason might do the trick.

I can see us going after one of the following:

  • Jamie Newman, Wake Forest (2-4th round)
  • Khalil Tate, Arizona (4-6th round
  • Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma (5-7th round)

Tate or Hurts (if he's available) would be perfect. Very similar to Cam, same winner attitude & poise, very mobile & strong arm. Especially Tate.

I have been doing lots of evaluating of the upcoming draft, and per the usual I tend to specialize in QBs, I also use a NFL scout as a resource for my own work. We do tend to disagree on some of these, but the general consensus is that if Tua comes out, 4-5 QBs will go in the first round of this years draft. With Cam possibly having a 11 month recovery time, it very well may be time to find a suitable replacement.

My rankings:
1. Justin Herbert
2. Tua Tagovailoa
3. Joe Burrow
4. Jacob Eason

Are the only ones I foreseeing going in the first round, with the off chance of Jalen Hurts or Jordan Love going as well. Of the ones listed, assuming we stay on the trail of a poor season (lets say two more wins leaving us at 7-9 and picking in the early to mid teens) I would assume either Tua or Eason would be the only ones potentially available at our picking spot, again assuming we don't reach for a guy like Love or Hurts. This leads to another interesting discussion when we ask "who would fit our offense" because we currently have no idea what that offense is going to look like. I would assume if we were to draft a QB in the first, which seems like a strong possibility, we would build that offense around him and CmC. Our current iteration of our offense would most fit Jalen Hurts (for obvious reasons) or Joe Burrow with Norv's system of quick reads and getting the ball out fast.

Of course this is all based on who we bring in as our next coach and GM, but which QB would you like to see take the mantle of our next franchise QB? I don't think we find one in the later rounds, and if we were to reinvest in the QB, it would have to be in round 1.

All Nfl qbs are gambles as rookies, i say we keep Cam and let Grier grow and see what we have in him. I think he fell so far because of how raw he is, he has everything that cant be tought imo and is missing things that can. Drafting another Qb is giving up on Grier and Allen as a backup. I like Cam-Grier-Allen, this is depending in Cam coming back healthy of course.

We getting Greg Roman to be the head coach/play caller?

If so, that could open up an entirely different set of QB's.

I am a little surprised that you have Burrow that low in your rankings.  What did you see on tape?

I think more than a couple of evaluators don't see a high ceiling on Burrow. I read a couple of draft articles where he was called a "game manager."

We will see. All that stuff gets a lot more dialed in towards the draft.

All these QBs have question marks and will definitely need to be vetted big time.  I like Eason but he is fairly inexperienced and very inconsistent atp.  Tua being a lefty and injury prone.  Herbert has been up and down as well.  Burrow is looking like the top guy right now to me but why the sudden huge jump from last year?  Lots of questions.

There is no way in Hell we are using a 1st rounder for a QB in 2020. Sorry man, but I don't see it happening.

Why in the World would that shock you?

New GM and HC with no ties to Grier, no Cam, and an obvious backup in Kyle?

Now I'm not saying that we will draft one in the 1st, but to state that there is "no way in hell" seems....um.....not a smart thing to say.
