I don't think it's that as much as Rivera asks his 3-4 DEs to fill one gap assignments as if they are 4-3 DEs. We are basically running a scheme similar to what Indy won with when Payton Manning was MVP and could score at will on any team. They used the speed of Freeny and Mathis to get to the opposing QB but give up rushing yards in chunks.

They weren't a good rush defense but they averaged 4.5, 4.6, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5ypc during his MVP season. They were never as bad as this rush D.

Do you think the change was to get to these NFCS QBs quicker? Past years experience had showed us that if you can't get to Matt Ryan and Drew Brees quickly they can pick you apart.

The result is more sacks which in our division is necessary. You've got to touch these NFCS QBs or you'll have no chance at all Cam included.

we are giving up 1st down rushes on almost ~29% of rushing plays, the worst in the nfl...

I mean there’s still 7 games left.  The run defense is bad, but I’m skeptical they’ll remain this bad the rest of the way.  Plus we’ve played some really strong run offenses so far; it gets easier down the stretch.  

They’ll probably still be below average, but not as poorly as they seem/look now.

Why did we ever let Star walk. He’s the key. I do not trust Hurney, but who ever is GM next year if we keep with this same defensive scheme we need a 1st round nose tackle. The old boys are just not cutting it.

No idea why we didn’t. His price tag was more than worth it. Additionally Star + KK + McCoy. Imagine that poo in a 3-4.

I like butler but he isn’t a nose tackle. He’s a 4-3 inside swim(aka KK’s sub). The only reason he’s looking so good is people aren’t doubling him as a nose and fug us cause he can’t hold the double team on a run.

Yeah, not to oversimplify things, but if you just look at where our run defense has trended since losing Star, and then compare that with how Buffalo's run defense has trended since acquiring him.... it does strongly suggest we shouldn't have let him walk or that Poe is less than satisfactory by comparison in that role. And I say that as someone who liked the change at the time, so clearly not something I'm gonna put on my resume for Marty's job.
