Bigger gamble Allen's ascension or Cams ability to stay healthy?

Chicago doesn't have the option to sign Cam.

The Panthers own Cam's rights through the end of next season.

Correct. My point is his agent knows if he plays elsewhere he can get his contract. That’s when holdouts happen and it can get ugly. I don’t see him wanting to play out his last year without an extension. He would prefer a trade/contract with a new team if the Panthers don’t give him one.

If some fool were to offer Cam a long-term deal with a lot of guaranteed money prior to next season.....

.....Cam would in fact be "smart" to sign that deal.

That said, only one team has the right to do so and Tepper's not going to let it happen.

Curious, specifically what do you believe will happen?

I think he will be traded or released this off season.  If traded it will probably be for less than some on here think.

Pure speculation on my part:

I could see Cam wanting top tier QB money based on the percentage of the offense he contributes.  Also he was a league MVP not that long ago.  Furthermore he has looked really good at times in this new offense when healthy.

On the other hand I can see the team not wanting to invest that kind of money in Cam.  Especially at his age and recent injury history.  Also some would make the argument that Cam might not age as well as some other QBs.  His ability to run is a large part of what has made him so dangerous in the past.

I'm not convinced this idea of letting Cam play on basically a 1yr/$19m prove it type of deal is as viable as an option as some people think.

I hear ya.

Where we differ is I don't believe any NFL team is going to trade for him and give him a long term contract prior to seeing him suit up and prove he can play again in the NFL and stay healthy -- doing so would be incredibly risky.

(put another way, if you are across the table from Tepper and he agrees to the deal you have to be questioning your position because the odds are overwhelming that you are entering into a really bad deal!)

Only time will tell.

My official position is if Cam plays in the NFL next year it will be with the Panthers.  And, if he plays in subsequent years, it will also be with the Panthers.

We'll see!

Cheers....

Good stuff.  Appreciate you getting on the record, most are unwilling to do so.  We are on the opposite sides of the trade!  (which makes a market :shades:)

Ditto the $19M prove it deal, from where I sit that's Cam's best option by a mile.

Cheers mate.
