IF we do fire Rivera, this definitely seems the year to do it.

Patricia has the Lions.  They suck no matter who coaches. Gase in all fairness has the Jets,..Kitchens is in hell too.

Those 2 places along with Cleveland and Cincinnati have some kind of curse stronger than any Bambino curse ever was.

Shurmur doesn’t suck— he’s done great considering the pressure to play a quarterback that wasn’t really ready yet after one that was done a few seasons ago, and no receivers to help etc.

i would still take Shurmur in a heartbeat. If he were fired I’m in.

It just depends on if tepper has balls or not. Because I can promise you that Rivera will not make it to the playoffs next year either.

this is the big thing. Rivera is honestly a worst case scenario coach who is never going to just completely bomb a season and justify you firing him. he's going to always hover around the middle where he's just good enough to keep his job, so it stretches out year after year after year after year.

that's a terrible position for a franchise to be in, it can also happen if you end up with a QB like  Cousins or Keenum who are 'good enough' without ever actually being good.

the only hope to get out of that sort of mess is an owner who won't care about the backlash from firing a coach who is 'good enough'

Rivera is and always will be a John Fox clone. I honestly think both Rivera and Huney should be fired but I understand not going scorched earth in one season. Both are horrible together and both are as you say "good enough" But will never be great.

The problem I see with Rivera is that he always says missed opportunities meaning the players did not execute .

He never takes the blame for not having the team ready or his game plan is bad .  On paper we should have a top 10 defense .  Is it the players or is it Rivera ?    We always seem to lose after a bye .  The team is only as good as the coach .

A lot of y'all are not going to like this but as long as we finish the season with a winning record, Ron will be back next year. He's shown he can reach the playoffs consecutively ('13 - '15), not afraid to be ballsy when needed (unlike Fox), fire his own men or call his own plays & can come up with winning records with a healthy QB under roster. Hell, he even reached the SB in '15! Did any of y'all expect us to be that good? Didn't think so.

He learned his lesson last year, starting with 6-2 & 1-7 afterwards. He knew he should've put Cam on IR right away & stick with Heineken or Kyle Allentown. Lastly, improving from a 0-2 start to 5-4 with a backup QB is rather impressive.

Whether he stays or goes depends on how he finishes. But if he finishes with 9-7 or better, Tepper will give him one last shot. If he wants a new contract, he's definitely going to have to reach at least the NFC championship. Tepper wants to win now.

No, it is not impressive. Christian McCaffrey is the main reason this team is 5-4.

Ron is a great coach. All this talk about firing him is silly. I would extend Ron and give him a better QB. If Cam gave us more seasons similar to his MVP season (or close), Ron would have given us a SB already. Coaches ride the forms of their best QB. When you take out the cheating Pats coach, Ron is right there with the best of them: Mike Tomlin, Jim Harbaugh(rode Flacco's insane year to a SB), Pete Carol (rode 2 crazy years of the LOB).

You are making the argument against Rivera, not for him.

Ron can't seem to find a way to fix the problems along the line, be it defensive or offensive. As a result, Cam gets hit more, injured more and the opportunities for Cam go away.

Remember, Ron's pedigree is as a defensive minded coach. How have the Panthers been doing in that regard? He isn't putting people in positions to excel, he simply tries the same thing over and over and hope his superstars excel.

How many 1st round picks do the Panthers have on defense, anyhow?

Ron relies on his superstars to ball out and they generally do, but help me understand which players he has helped become MORE than they were when they arrived? Has Moton reached a new level? Bradberry progressed from good to all-star caliber? That's debatable. Shaq has been in this defense for four years and is doing better, but he isn't going to break the bank in free agency. I'd say Jackson might be WORSE now than last year. Ron just can't seem to take decent players and make them into a better, cohesive team.

All those 1st round picks and this defense.

It's time for Ron to go.

We will see, but since buying the team he seems far more focused on shoving taxpayer money into his pocket rather than the product he is charging the general public to support.

    • Well unfortunately nothing to us. But he has been giving to the rest of the league. He's been so bad he was getting opposing defenders all kinds of accolades and salary increases. Now though he's taking back. You can't lose to a Bryce Young led offense and not expect swift ramifications ya know?
    • Full disclosure I responded to this before fully reading the whole post. As if I had, I’d have laughed at you saying you haven’t seen a full route tree from him, as that’s EXACTLY what he has in his bag.  That right there just shows you haven’t watched him at all outside of the downfield highlight reel plays.  He already runs a full NFL level route tree, at all 3 levels.  As I’ve said numerous times before, XL is the big bodied possession guy, while T-Mac would be the true outside #1 who can do it all and a perfect compliment to XL.   Want to draft someone else all you want, that’s totally fair.  But don’t try and say he’s just a big bodied WR who lacks quickness and can’t run a full route tree, as it’s just the furthest thing from the truth.
    • My perfect offseason at QB would be trade Bryce, sign Lock (experience with Canales) and draft Ewers in the second or late in the first
