17 game regular season incoming

Lame. I think less games would be better personally. Keep the preseason games (crucial to backups and guys trying to make the roster).

Play your division opponents twice each (6 games) then play another 6 games with 4 being in-conference and two out of conference. Make the playoff bracket double elimination.

I think there used to be 6 preseason games back in the day--what were they thinking?

The 17th game (on a neutral field) would prevent season ticket holders in some cities from being cheated out of a game--by having the team play home games in Tokyo or wherever.

we're not actually mods yet! @rayzor

though just being 'panther4trump' isn't against any rules or they'd have to remove every political avatar (like the andrew yang one) etc. just that sort of overt political commentary should be kept in the tb

I didn't care about the panther 4 trump thing. But saying democrats don't like to work and some of the other stuff he posted was crossing a line

Keep in mind there were only 14 regular season games at the time.

I forgot.  So nearly half the season was "for practice?"  Wow.

I actually think the current 4-16 split is just fine. Nor do I see the need for expanded playoffs. Why the hell should nearly half the teams in the league make the playoffs?

Trying to get more regular season and playoff games has zero to do with making the product on the field better or improving player safety. It's just the owners trying to make even more money.

I think 2 preseason games, a neutral site 17th game to promote the product globally, and expanding the roster is a good move if you consider how useless the preseason has become--nothing more than tryouts for free agents.  If you expand the NFL playoff pool you get some terrible first round games and it hurts the league, if you ask me.  This ain't the NBA.

I like having those "tryouts".

They're what give young players a chance to get noticed and show they can contribute.

I'm fine with the expansion to 17 if it comes with:

- Reducing preseason games.

- Expanding rosters.

- Adjusting player salaries and salary caps accordingly.

And, no, I do NOT want to see the playoffs expand. The NFL playoffs is the best of the major professional sports in structure, IMO. Don't fug it up.

I don't think those preseason games are particularly critical to coaching staffs or front offices. They have already gotten the ability to evaluate these guys all through camp.

I don't really think you can properly evaluate guys by practice alone.

Remember, back in training camp we thought we were going to be really good. Then we came up against the Bills...

Sure but it probably also doesn't take 4 preseason games to get a feel for who is gonna make it. After all, it's mostly a small group of depth guys battling for a few depth or special teams slots. Important but not critical.

I'd be okay with three preseason games oh, but I don't believe more than 16 regular-season games is needed.

That said, no way in hell I think the league agrees to fewer games overall.

Well, it is the best way to increase the price on their TV deals, get more games.

Turns out this might have been leaked by the league.

The Players Association says "not so fast".

NFL, Players Association not close to a new deal

Not surprised. Get the public to be behind it, then they will turn on the players if they push back. Classic maneuver.

    • I mean.....his guy has to be someone willing to come so Geno Smith is out. If you mean RUSSELL Wilson, that is laughable. Fields and ZACH Wilson are just basically the beginning of the end. These aren't likely to be Geno Smith turnarounds. Fields is further proving that he just isn't much more than a gimmick player. Zach Wilson still probably needs a year or two under some better circumstances before I would consider him a candidate for being a turnaround. He is just jumping straight back into the NY Jets fire here.
    • This is factually incorrect. He was a two time Pro Bowler with the Rams and in fact statistically he was better with the Rams in his best season there than he has been with the Lions(could change with this season). Some of his per game stats have creeped into being marginally better with the Lions but there have not been dramatic differences in his play, actually. The biggest reason that McVay and he ended up splitting was McVay didn't think he could win a title with Goff. TBH.....so far he was 100% correct. Stafford almost immediately won them a SB and Goff in a historic run was about 70% of the reason the Lions faltered in the NFC championship game. He missed critical throws all over the first half and throughout the second half that he normally wouldn't. He choked. So, until Goff actually does win a SB...McVay has been right.
    • they have the best defense they've had in a long time...probably the best in the reid/mahommes era.  but i think they are probably the most beatable they've been in a while as well. record doesn't exactly bear that out, but they just don't look as strong on offense as they usually do. lots of reasons for that, like trying to build chemistry with newer receivers, but right now they just aren't as frightening as they typically are. i mean they'll probably win tomorrow, but i don't see them as the strongest team in the AFC right now.
