I love numbers, thank you, I appreciate that link!!! - I mean, definitely doesn't look like the OL is THAT terrible! ;)

Oh yeah, I love analytics and metrics soooooo much. I get my full geek on with all these numbers.

The truth is though, we watch the games and the eye test is pretty bad, numbers aside. The numbers are really just confirming what we are seeing in a lot of ways.

This is the problem a lot of numbers geeks have.  They use the numbers to determine what they see, instead of using the numbers to reinforce and explain what they see.

Eh, so far for the season he is 17th with a Time To Throw of 2.77 so far (Cam is dead last with 2.37). The only 2 QB's with more Time To Throw but with a lower QB rating for the season so far are Josh Allen and Jerod Goff. Also, that isn't factoring in sacks (Panthers have had 36, allowed 29). So yes, I could see the OL could use some beefing up, but you don't have the league second leading rusher with a "HORRIFIC" OL. Having the 3rd lowest QB Rating of those top 17 Time To Throw, tells me either the passes are off, or the WR's aren't producing.

*It's all about the numbers!

Interesting, source? From the eye test it looks like the edges are collapsing during every dropback.

Also, unpopular opinion incoming, but I actually do miss having Funchess (v2017) in the slot running quick slant and digs across the middle. It always seemed to be a pretty good outlet for Cam.

How do you feel about first half of the season?

We had two close losses to start off, Cam playing injured.  Then we beat everyone except away SF which is clearly a better team this season and one yard short in GB on refs/snow/final play.

My grades for 5-4 record weighing strength of teams we played.

Offense: B.  CMC was the reason we have an offense but in last 2 games Moore is showing he may be worth a 1st round selection. Allen is solid, improving game to game.  Offensive Line was the main issue on offense in the first half and the reason this grade isn’t higher.

Defense: C-. Let me split it to say Run defense is an F.  Pass defense is a B,  containing Rogers and  other good QBs.  Getting sweet revenge on Winston in London, probably the best game defense had this season.

Overall:  B-  Pretty much for 5-4 record that’s the grade.  Some areas are much much worse than others.

Pass defense is only a B with Bradberry in there, otherwise it's mediocre.

The pass defense gets neutered when teams know they can run all over us. You kind of have to count on coaches being idiots (like Vrabel).

I want to say overall that the secondary coaching is definitely better than it was in previous years, but damn, can anybody back there other than James Bradberry tackle?

I think our secondary is looking better(for the most part) because we have more talent available. I don't think it has a lot to do with the positional coaching. We had no Cockrell or Boston last year. As much as I ripped Boston, he has actually been pretty damn good for us. The only real weak link(when we are healthy) is Eric Reid.

I think you have to consider coaching as at least part of it, especially when you consider our secondary last year was being coached by Richard Rodgers.

(Sure fixed things when Rivera fired Jeff Imamura, didn't it?) :eyeroll:

At the very least, I think Fewell has helped Bradberry take the next step. I also believe he helped make Reid better than he was before (even if he still can't tackle for sh-t).

Yeah, I think once you get down to the positional coach level it is going to be very, very hard for fans to really be able to determine the impact. Lots of factors and we don't get to see the day-to-day work that those guys do/don't do to gauge that kind of impact.

I tend to just try to see whether the units look like they're playing better from one season to the next.

Right now, I'd call it a mixed bag.
