I think you are thinking about this all wrong. I honestly don't think we value a return guy at all. Anyone can do it.

Of all the things that puzzle me about the utter mediocrity that is Ron Rivera (and those things are legion), two of the biggest are the null-level priority he places on the following two things:

- A ball-hawking safety on defense in today’s pass-friendly NFL

- Special teams

Not my Demon Deac, Dortch :(

I don't get it.

We've had an entire season of guys muffing and dropping punts and kicks. We bring a guy in who doesn't, and also actually looks decent doing returns, then one game later we deactivate him and a few days after that let him go.

Makes absolutely no sense to me.

We had a guy who had trouble handling punts this past weekend. Why keep him over Dortch?

I know no one is guaranteed a job in the NFL. And the Huddle tells me to not feel sorry for the millionaire NFL players. But I really do feel sorry for Dortch. Signed off a practice squad where he was at least getting a paycheck and involved in football then 2 weeks later he's waived, has no job, and he's not in football any more. And I thought he did well.

btw DJ Moore is our return guy on the Pro Bowl ballot.

Because we need a running back like him on the team so that we can practice tackling traditional running backs in practice.

No one is getting practice at tackling CMC.

So why not cut one of the other runningbacks that we already weren't using?

(I can't imagine it would have been difficult to sneak them back on the practice squad)

Why instead cut a guy who actually made a positive (if brief) impact in a game?

Couldn't tell you why they cut a particular guy, but perhaps the RB candidates we have were retained because they offer similar skill sets to CMC, just to lesser and lesser degrees. Perhaps, also, we may need them as the season wears on and CMC takes more hits. RB4 can be the one-cut and slam guy in practice that our defense needs.

I will say, though, that the lack of run defense seems to be happening across the league and I think a lot of it has to do with less practices in pads and full contact and an emerging college game that relies on spread offenses.

If I were asked how to fix ours, I'd say we need to move Luke back to run defense more and less into dropping back into pass defense. Make him the RB spy on each play and put the best tackler the sport has seen in decades do what he does best.

It's not happening across the league to our level.

No team in the league has given up a larger number of runs of 10 yards or more than us.

That's just embarrassing..
