Opinions: could they afford a 19 million cap hit?

You do realize that if you don't pay Cam you're going to pay someone else that right? You won't be able to use that money to sign anyone. Kyle Allen or whoever else will be asking for that money, or more. At best you're looking at keeping Kyle for a year on a very cheap contract, though that's if he plays poorly the rest of the season. If he plays very well, then why would he go into the next season with the Panthers without holding out?

The only scenario where the Panthers benefit cap wise by trading or cutting Cam is if they draft quarterback or roll with Grier. One way or another they're going to have to pay a quarterback this year, or next. You can't sign anyone to a large contract this off-season with a looming franchise quarterback contract on the horizon.

We really need the 19-21 million to address plenty of other needs

I think Tepper feels Rivera is a good coach and he has been advised by many he trusts of the same.  He had reservations about Cam from the start and that is a huge reason he won’t pay Cam top dollar and well as Cam not playing well or being able to stay healthy since Tepper purchased the team.  Not all of the aforementioned is Cams fault, but it solidifies teppers reservations  about cam.   Honesty, I think as long as Allen plays well and the team wins 10 games Rivera will be retained.  Tepper knows the pulse of the staff and he will do what he feels is right, which I feel is keeping Rivera.

I’m okay with keeping Rivera but Tepper needs to find his own GM to start the process early. Rivera’s seat needs to be hot or at least warm all  season next year if he is brought back.

I seriously feel a rebuilding year will come and lots of bad contracts will be gutted. I don't really see much why Cam would want to live through that unless he's given a long extension and that's not happening.

Me too but you have to keep the main core intact. Those guys are Luke, James, and Shaq on the defensive side. Everyone else playing defense can be let go.

Gonna throw this out there. Could they realistically  afford the 19 million to resign a QB with the needs that this team has? Between the vets they have to resign, the obvious needs on both lines (with other needs), and CMC to try and lock in....it was never feasible.

I feel that Tepper is not considering doing the deal (or really ever was.) Cam wasn't his guy and he has no reason to have allegiance to him.

What is your opinion.....was it just a pipe dream that this would all work out and was never realistic financially ?

I'm sure Tepper would've loved to do the deal, especially after we went 6-2 last season. But after watching Cam get injured three times in 1 year, I'm sure Tepper is very concerned on Cam's health & would prefer to sign/draft someone younger & non-injury prone.

Dan Graziano from ESPN made a very good point. If Kyle Allen performs well for the rest of this season the Panthers can do the following:

Quote

"Regardless of how Allen performs, the Panthers will have the right to hold him in place for 2020 on a one-year, $585,000 contract. Assuming the same or similar rules under the new CBA, they also would -- regardless of how he performs -- have the right to hold him in place for 2021 on a one-year, $675,000 contract. If he were to complete that season with Carolina, he would be eligible for restricted free agency in 2022, which means the team could give him a first-round tender for something like $5.5 million and still hold him in place unless another team came with a big contract offer and a willingness to give Carolina a first-round pick for him"

I think you can get a cheaper LB in the draft than Shaq. You sign him you either have to let Bradberry or CMC go and that's not cool for me.

If you had 19 million to spend on this team at this moment, what would you realistically spend it on? I think I'd try to grab a solid proven vet 3-4 DE and a starting Guard. Not enough money to fix both the d and o line but it would be a start.

I would go all out on O-Line.....and worry about D-line later.  Even if the defense is struggling to keep points off the board, a great O-line providing protection to allow the QB to get comfortable and make great throws to WR having a tad more time to break open or open lanes for RB....we can put up points to match or get ahead for the win.  Yes i know it is more complicated than that but it is a start for me.

So what are the other options?

Unfortunately, this is what it will probably come down to for Mr. Tepper this offseason. Not just for Cam, but also coaching and front office. We probably will have to eat the 19mil simply because you don't find QBs at Cam's (previous!) level that often. An d yes, nobody wants to go into Browns or Dolphins mode where we wait around for another 10-20 years to "Luck" out on a good 1st round QB. And let's not forget that we did, indeed, luck out with Cam. He didn't really present all that well starting out.
