Opinions: could they afford a 19 million cap hit?

Would you seriously offer to extend an over 30 quarterback who basically hasn't been able to stay healthy for the better part of two years?

If you saw some other team do that, what would you say?

I didn't say I would, I was merely explaining why the 19 million is not a cap hit. It is the cap savings if he is cut. two different things.

Gotcha.

As I understand, Newton's cap hit next year is 21 million. It goes down to 2 million if he's cut or traded.

Big Ben has had some really good years post 30

Brady is past 40. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean everybody can do it.

Even more unfortunate, Newton has absorbed more physical punishment then many quarterbacks who have had even longer careers.

As I heard one analyst put it, chronologically he's 30. When you factor in all the hits he's taken, he's 35.

It depends on how he looks fully healthy, or as healthy as he is going to get. If he is still having issues with his foot he becomes a cap casualty, if not, I'm not so sure. I almost think they have to at least show some intent to keep him if they hope to get anything out of another team for trade value. No one is giving up more than a 3rd or 4th for Cam in his current physical condition with so much uncertainty surrounding his inuries.

This is interesting if true:

"Tepper, who purchased the team for roughly $2.3 billion in May of 2018, told associates at the time of the transaction that he was unsure about whether Newton would prove to merit another top-of-market contract and was interested to see how the quarterback would fare. He had some reservations about the prospect of a new deal even then, sources said, and considered that position to be under review as he evaluated the entire organization and decided where to begin making changes."

That's the rub- he's not MVP level. Hasn't been for a couple years now.

And he's not being paid MVP level money.

Guys earning more who aren't playing at MVP level off the top of my head:

RyaN

COUSINS

RODGERS

BREES

BRADY

RIVERS

Jimmy G

WENTZ

CARR.

For perspective Eli is making 17mil this year.

All of these are guys who are at least playing.  And at a high level.  Cam cannot even get in the field.
