Panthers Making Good Decisions | Norwell, Fun & Star Among Worst Contracts in the NFL

Hurney deserves credit for several things but an underrated aspect of his 2nd term is the minimization of large guaranteed contracts. Even contracts that people have complained about at one point or another either involve a very small percentage of the cap like Gano's, where the $3 million extra we pay him would buy us a backup lineman, or has easy outs after 1 or 2 years like Poe's contract. What really hurts are contracts like Kalil's where you're saddled with a huge portion of your cap devoted to a player with no easy out in sight. His other signings mimic this too: 1 year deals on McCoy, Boston, Irvin and Daryl Williams, 3 years on Paradis and Reid with outs after 2 years. Where it gets interesting is what he'll do with Bradberry and Shaq and will really dictate how much he's improved.

Coming form a "herniay hater", if he signs Bradberry & Shaq to decent contracts. (around 15 million per for both). That will go along way to gain more support. I already stated a few times this was my favorite herniay off-season in his era BY FAR.  He is drafting much better in the 2-7 rounds and finding bargains in free agency. Hes done a great job and I did not want him back.

They have gerald mccoy listed as our worst contract? If he's our worst, we're doing pretty good

Makes no sense...one year deal.

Our worst contract is KK if you don’t count M Kalil who is still being paid. Next would be Williams.

Then considering Olsen didn’t play for two years would be his extension though he’s doing well this year. Poe was pretty much average until this year as well, but he’s doing very well now.

Once KK and Matt are completely off the books the Panthers are in a good spot. Have to pay Bradberry and Shaq as well as getting ready for CMC and a new qb/Cam.

Hurney isn’t doing bad and isn’t doing great. I still think he needs more time here round 2 to know for sure. I wasn’t happy with things like KK extension but was also impressed Hurney knew it was time to let TD go and Shaq was ready.

Another couple years and we’d know for sure but it also won’t bother me if a new GM was brought in.

I agree. It’s just that time. I really want to see what a regimen built by Tepper would look like. I really want to see what a clean slate for the team will do. We keep clinging on to the same old people and same old philosophy. Some are scared to move on from the mediocrity and occasional success for fear of failure or short term growing pains. But personally, I’d be excited and want to take the risks.

Kalil’s deal sucked but it’s hardly the albatross you are saying it is. It was $25M total. That’s it. You can’t look at the $15M in dead cap without also realizing he only counted $10M against the cap in his first two years. The deal was really backloaded to save money up front. Poe has already counted $18M against the cap in two years and if he stays for year three he’ll have counted $28M or more than Kalil.

People still even bring up the $55M for Kalil but we never got close to paying that all out and guys like Poe cost us almost as much.

You have to consider Matt was given free money at least Poe has been average, and seems to at least be giving us a good year this year. It’s not just the amount it’s what you get in return.

Well it seems to be backed up by the opinion of those who follow the team.

So those guys have bad contracts? That's the subject.

Who’s opinion? Because that post leaves nothing but a PFF grade as the absolute factor in determining a player’s value

So according to PFF, not me, none of them are worth their contract or draft pick. Which is why I asked the question to begin with.

I hear ya. It’s like how we had to take a 20M cap hit in 2015 for CJ and he was worth about 3M at best. Those do sting. And still had to eat another 4M just to cut him the next year.

Star is a space eater and block occupier.

Look at the Panthers' defensive rankings while he was here vs. after, then do the same for the Bills. That's where Star's value shows up

With Star- "Man, KK is a BEAST!!"

Without Star- "KK seems to be having an off year."

But I was told Hurney didn't know how to manage free agency and just mindlessly overpaid and overextended every veteran

He's looking a lot better now that Richardson isn't meddling and influencing him

Yeah and netted us a third rd pick for Benjamin that isn't even playing football anymore.

Star is so under appreciated. His play elevates players around him. It will never show up on the stat sheet, but he was a huge part of our success on defense here, and I bet if you ask the bills linebackers, he plays a huge role in the success of that defense as well.
