Newton was constantly criticized for his 17th century fashion choice as a guise to disrupt his contributions to the scientific community. Organizations and his own government routinely took his value for granted, and was eager to replace him at the first sign of inaccuracy in his theories. Many wanted him replaced as the poster child of academia and scientific community for others who just managed science at an average level. They would point at things like him always wearing a scarf over his head after hours of meticulous equation solving. They said it showed a lack of humility and stewardship of the profession. It was of not consequence to those people that he wore the scarf whether his calculations were accurate or not.  It wasn’t until he was gone, did people really appreciate what he accomplished for their community.
