Joey Slye is tied for 26th in FG percentage this year

Think about how mediocre your franchise has to be for fans to go out of their way to fall on their swords for a kicker like Graham Gano who was quite literally ran out of Washington. When even Dan Snyder thinks you're a choker, what more is there to say?

You can blubber about Slye all you want, he's dirt cheap and if he can't cut it then someone else will be brought in for similar cost. But with the free agents we have coming up in 2020 I can all but guarantee that someone else won't be a 33 year old kicker with a bum knee making top money.

We don't save much if anything from cutting Gano this offseason due to dead money

So our cost for keeping Gano for next year will effectively be the same as Slye next season

Yeah sorry, I'm keeping Gano if we don't get a cap benefit from it

We can find someone else in 2021

The dead cap cost difference in cutting him next year versus 2021 is around 1.5 million.

If he's not the guy moving forward he will be gone in 2020 and that's that. We can easily find a replacement if we have lost faith in Slye by that point.

But again, we have more pressing concerns. Unless Joey proceeds to poo the bed entirely the rest of the season the odds he won't be the starter next year are pretty low.

There is no way the Panthers are going to throw another 1.5M into a sunk cost like Gano. That’s the same line of thinking that people used to say that we should keep Matt Kalil this year. .

It's not the same at al

Gano is not perfect by any stretch, but he's easily a top 10 kicker (performed like a top 5 kicker the past few years).  Comparing a top end kicker (or at the very worst, above average), to the worst left tackle in the NFL, doesn't make much sense.

Gano is easily worth 1.5 million dollars

It's amazing that people hate Gano so much they want to compare someone who had an elite 92% capture rate the past 2 seasons to Matt Kalil

The comparison is the sunk cost. Something you fail to grasp. Gano is done here. Why would you pay 1.5M more than the 3M you already are stuck with, for a guy who will be injured or suck. What was his magical capture rate In 2016? The season we chose him over a cheaper, better option? If it’s only about the last season, why was he here after that disaster of a season?

Hoping that Slye improves from his bad rookie season is a pure gamble.  There is nothing to suggest he's more likely to improve than any other jag kicker.

He was a 70% kicker in college.  Slye has never been accurate and there's nothing to suggest he ever will;  he has a strong leg but that's about it.

Good teams don't gamble.

I guess good teams give 9M guaranteed to an injury-prone, inconsistent PK coming off by far his best season only to have to pay another PK to do his job.

   Good call.

In what universe is a kicker intentionally being held back from long range by his head coach considered a top end kicker?

He's boom or bust at best. Which is what we can get out of Slye at a fraction of the cost.

I swear Gano has relatives on this message board lol.

I only saw a few people mention it but how does no one remember how bad Gano was to start off his career?  He was MILES worse than Joey.  Joey has a few long misses in here.  There have been maybe 3-4 this season that I was like, f*ck, that would've been good make in the moment.  That's it.  He's fine until there's an egregious fugup.

Gotta remember he was the first decision of the “reboot”.  No matter how bad it looks now(and then), people ain’t letting go without a fight...lol

Don't think you understand the concept of sunk costs....

....that said, Gano is done -- he won't play in the NFL again.

In your opinion how many years will Slye be the Panthers starting kicker?  Is he the guy for the next decade?  Will he be the kicker next year?  Something in between?

Slye also has the most attempts of 40+ this year AND 50+ attempts compared to others in the NFL right now. He is 5/8 on the 40+ with a few blocks but he has attempted 7 50+ kicks this year while the league avg for 50+ right now is 3 attempts.

Exactly. He’s not missing chip shots routinely.

Good post.

Gano's Capture Rate® over the last 2 seasons combined was in excess of 92%....

....Slye's Capture Rate® is just over 76%.

You get what you pay for....

NOTE:  Capture Rate® = points scored/possible points.
