At the risk of putting too fine a point on this, what if Allen does just enough to help the Panthers to qualify for the playoffs, but his performances are less than confidence inspiring? And what if Cam's cannon arm and his gimpy foot are 90% or better?  What now?

This is similar to a concern of mine, though in a different context.

It's generally acknowledged that next year's draft is pretty good for quarterbacks. It's also been reported that Hurney and Rivera think Kyle Allen is better than just a placeholder.

One of my longtime criticisms of the Panthers under Rivera has been the "good enough" mentality. Likewise, the love of "try hard" players who, while they may not be as talented, give it their best.

Put all those things together and you have my worry that maybe Allen winds up looking good enough this season to get the team to bypass quarterback in the draft, but then doesn't look as good in the future.

Maybe that's paranoid on my part, but having been here for a while, I've seen that movie before.

Oh, I could absolutely see your scenario coming to fruition.

I think it would be very tempting for Ron and Hurney to stay pat with Allen if he gives an average or slightly above performance this season, especially after using a third round draft pick on a QB this year.

I would hope if a top tier QB prospect were available the Panthers would look to upgrade under those circumstances, but I don't believe that is in their nature, especially with so many other needs to fill.

If I'm being honest, I'm hoping that when that time comes, they're not the people making those decisions.

I really don't trust them at all.

Carry on.  We got a tough schedule ahead and you are onboard with who we have, or if not then it’s because Ron has to go. Allen didn’t warrant any hate by any of his actions on or off the field.

Rooting against Allen makes no sense anymore.

Im rooting for Allen to win out first and foremost because im a panthers fan but this also means Ron and Marty are retained and Cam gets a lets see what ya got year. I think Ron will and its about time, stick his neck out and put his job on the line for Cam.

This is what scaring me the most, Ron and hurney sticking with Allen because a new young talented QB wouldn't be good for job security. Allen comes back next year and shows exactly why he went undrafted and the defense also comes back to earth a lil far as carrying the load. This is why i say if the cam era is over then so does the ron hurney era go as well. Let a new staff come in to groom roster and have the time to do it.

I think we have young core of players.  A couple of holes sure but we lead the league in sacks and take aways.  We don’t need complete rebuild just gradually improve on areas of weakness through draft or can sign FA if they become available.
