I don't think there ever really was any hope.

Your ability to accurately prognosticate Cam's future without access to his medical records is impressive indeed!

Even with my Magic 8 Ball I was left wondering (until today) how this story would play out.

Are you equally adept at picking stocks?

Remember that monkey they used to have that picked stocks?

He's better.

To be clear though, what I'm talking about is hindsight, not prognostication.

We all believed Newton was healing, until it turned out that he wasn't.

As soon as Cam isn't in the picture it will happen. Right now the anti-Newton crowd need Allen to make an argument for them. After Cam is out the door they'll throw Allen under the bus for real prospect. That is unless Kyle actually becomes a NFL quarterback in this last half of the season.

Yeah, I don't see Allen getting a free ride from the fans until "Cam is out the door".  Especially if "out the door" means sometime after the conclusion of the 2019 season.  Kyle would have to perform at a level much higher than what we've seen so far for that to happen.

1) Has it even been confirmed yet that Cam can't come back should the Panthers make the Playoffs?  I honestly haven't heard if that's the case.

2) Also, Allen will be facing several playoff caliber teams in the coming weeks.  So, it is highly unlikely that the Panthers will finish the season without several more losses added to their record.  With every loss it is inevitable that some fans and media pundits will question Kyle's abilities as starting QB material and wonder out loud if Grier wouldn't be the better option.

In other words, it won't be long before another QB controversy emerges.

You wouldn't happen to have this monkey's contact info would you?

I'm asking for Tepper.

He could come back for playoffs if we make it

Rodrigue points out that a playoff return is highly unlikely.

For one, Newton being put on injured reserve now means he can't practice for six weeks. It'd be a lot to ask him to get back into football shape and playoff prepared that quickly.

She also pointed out that if Kyle Allen were playing good enough to get us to the playoffs, it would seem counterproductive to change horses in midstream at that point.

There are other reasons, but that's probably enough.

Well, I'm not about to prognosticate what the Panthers brain trust will decide to do with Cam if the team makes the playoffs.  There are still too many variables to account for.

However, it seems to me that once upon a time Buffalo was faced with a similar situation and chose to go with the QB that didn't get them to the dance.  It didn't end well.

You just like using the word "prognosticate", don't you?

To be fair, both the Eagles and the Giants won Super Bowls with backup quarterbacks. others may have done it too but those are the ones that come immediately to mind. Mind you, I don't think either of those guys were undrafted.

The Ravens won with dilfer, not a backup but he wasn't very good. Kurt Warner was technically a backup, but that's stretching the definition.

All the current prognosticating says the Panthers believe that Newton is done for the year. Granted, that could change.

Is there anything preventing Newton from working out with his personal trainer/assistants somewhere other than the Panthers facilities? If not, I could see Cam doing whatever it took to position himself for a potential return come playoff time.

At the risk of putting too fine a point on this, what if Allen does just enough to help the Panthers to qualify for the playoffs, but his performances are less than confidence inspiring? And what if Cam's cannon arm and his gimpy foot are 90% or better?  What now?
