If the Panther's let Cam Newton go

Over the course of 25 years as a Panther fan, I've had a lot of favorite and very well liked players.

I couldn't name a single one of them that left here (voluntarily or involuntarily) feeling like they got everything they wanted out of their Panthers career.

When the time comes, the same will probably be said for a lot of our current players.

Like I said, that's just football.

Fairy tale endings are the exception, not the norm.

While you're right, the thing that makes this sting is the extremes that took place with Cam in particular.

I have tons of favorite players before Cam as well, but how many won MVP?  How many led us to a Superbowl, almost entirely on his own?  As great as all the other Panthers were before Cam, they weren't capable of his impact because they didn't handle the ball every snap (in combination with his size/skill).  Take all that and ruin it with s coaching and medical staff that ruined his shoulder and likely his career, and he doesn't even make it ten years here.  That is just jarring.  I understand they play different styles, but with guys like Brady, Rodgers, Brees playing through their mid-30s and beyond, it's insulting that we finally got our franchise QB, and we rode him into the ground by 30.  And for similar skillsets, Russell Wilson is still going strong.  Rodgers is pretty mobile, has taken a lot of hits, and he's still going strong.  In the past Vick and Cunningham both played into their 30s without major injuries derailing their careers.

The way this staff and organization used him up like a piece of meat despite the sheer amount of talent and impact he had is despicable.

I'm always gonna be a Panthers fan, but if this is how it plays out, it's gonna take a lot of wind out of my sails...  I am with you on all of your points...  it's on Rivera and his staff, and should've never come to this.

To stand by guys like TD, Kalil, and Olsen as they overcame injuries while contributing less than what Cam has/does, there would be nothing more Panthers than that.  It's inexcusable.  This is a franchise QB, former league MVP, and if they cut ties with the chance of him becoming fully healthy again, what a slap in the face.  This isn't just a team leader or role player, this has been the face of the franchise and a face of the league...  and if they make this move, it will just further prove that Rivera viewed Cam as nothing more than means to an end, and not the talent that he is actually is.  Pisses me off...

Cam hasn't been healthy in years and will cost 20 million next year and 30 with an extension. Davis took a big salary cut to stay here and prove himself. If Cam wants to renegotiate his contract and play next year on a 10 million dollar 1 year prove it deal, I am all in.  I would probably pay him the 20 million for next year if he showed he was healthy by free agent signing period begins. Not sure the timing will work out that way or what Tepper is thinking since he doesn't have strong ties to Cam like Rivera and Hurney do...

Like it has since Kyle took over and went 5-1???

Cardinals, Titans, Tampa Bay, Jaguars, Kyle is playing fine, but we’re not beating world beaters. I pray Kyle dispels the narrative that he can’t be good teams this Sunday, that would definitely sell me that he is capable of postseason play.

No, at the level both James and Shaq are playing this year I doubt 20 mil in extra cap space resigns them both. I didn’t even consider the probability of Olsen hanging it up this year to go into sports broadcasting would leave Kyle devoid of his #2 safety blanket behind CMac.

Believe it or not, the roster next season could look DRASTICALLY different. For better or worse.

Sure 20 million covers both. First year deals are always cheap since the signing bonus serves as their salary and is prorated over the length of the contract.

Lol so your opinion is that even if Cam doesn’t come back, we still likely let one of Bradberry or Shaq walk? And you’re serious?

You aren’t being honest. You know we are better than a bottom feeder next year, it just doesn’t fit your agenda right now. Well that’s on you. Cheers

Shaq and Bradberry are both free agents next year, and both might net a high contract.

I wouldn't necessarily tie it to Newton (and I don't know if anybody did), but the possibility that they won't be back definitely does exist.

Why did you leave houston out?

I have read several posts saying, "It's just football". Well we are not actually talking about generic NFL football, or other NFL teams, we are talking about "Panthers Football".  I have bleed black and blue for years. I choose to root for the Panthers because I grew up in NC and they usually have players that represented what I value. I do not blindly support anybody or anything.

Again, this is not so much of a what or a who question.  Its a how thing.  IF they get rid of Cam when he is still capable of playing then I will be disappointed that the team ran off the player who sacrificed their actual body for.  Like that is why he is in this position to begin with.  Rivera has been constantly trying to save his job for years and used Cam to achieve those ends.  Cam is going to be 31 not 41.

Keep Pounding... unless you get hurt two years in a row.

Two things I'd point out.

One, sticking with those guys for as long as we did was arguably a mistake.

Two, pretty much all of what you're describing happened under Jerry Richardson.

David Tepper might prefer a different approach.

Rodrigue has said that while she believes Ron and Marty would be willing to give Cam an extension, Tepper doesn't seem so inclined. Given both his business and football backgrounds, that's not necessarily a shock.

It's also possible that Ron and Marty won't be here next year either, so...

I sure hope so because it’s likely Irvin, McCoy, Poe and possibly Addison are gone.

Still think the smart thing to do is bring him back next season with it being the last year of his contract and see how he does at the start of the season. If he still can't get healthy or if he struggles badly, then you can look at trading him before next year's trade deadline - I know the value in return would be much lower than if he was traded before the start of next season, but if we let him walk and he still has only 75% of what he had in 2015, we would look like morons and would badly regret moving on from him.

Cam needs to make sure he rests and rehabs appropriately and doesn't re-aggravate any injuries

Also, keeping Cam on the books for 20 mil next year is a bargain, if he can run pain free.

Now, if Cam is adamant that he is not playing under a one year deal, then that certainly changes the calculus.  Again the questions is HOW it goes down. I wouldn't blame either side if this is the reality.

I hope we have a new staff who wants Cam to be the QB.

I don’t consider them a bad team, but aside one offensive drive, the Panthers won in spite of Kyle’s fumbles and non-productivity. It’s not a slam on Kyle, but the defense held a top 10 offense to 10 points that Sunday. Trying to spin that otherwise is just.. silly.
