Likely won't see Cam in a Panthers uni again

Putting it all together, it seems that's the way it may go. Tepper the "analytics guy", probably see's a 30 year old QB with shoulder issues (and now a bad foot that is having issues healing.) He also see's a QB who needs to be a duel threat to be successful at his position, who is also looking at a new contract.

Cam is not a pocket passer and never will be. If he can't play at a certain level, then it's a problem.. Add in the fact there may be a whole new coaching staff next season.....it all points to one conclusion.

Don't think that you understand how trades nor contracts work....or leverage for that matter.

The Panthers CAN trade or cut him, but aren't forced to do so, they hold his rights, and he is under contract.

If the Panthers do trade him, they will pick the city and the compensation, meanwhile the new team would have to agree to said compensation, and agree with Cam on a new contract with him not playing in over a year.  I cannot recall the last time something like that happened.

End of the day, Cam can retire....that is the only way he truly controls his destiny.  Every other outcome has the Panthers controlling it.

This is a good counterpoint.  And whether it's Hurney or someone else, I don't think we are going to have a GM who is arrogant enough to lose Newton without it being on their terms and without significant compensation.

LOL it’s a game of thrones reference. Yes I know someone that hinted at big issues coming about 6 weeks ago.

This has been brewing for a lot longer than 6 weeks.

Contract/rehab/surgery stipulations.

Also,  Cam isn’t a dummy. He’s going to sucker one team into giving him a chunk of change this offseason.

Here is the official release from the Panthers on the matter.

The Carolina Panthers have placed quarterback Cam Newton (foot) on injured reserve, the Panthers announced Tuesday.

“For the past seven weeks, Cam has diligently followed a program of rest and rehab and still is experiencing pain in his foot,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “He saw two foot specialists last week who agreed that he should continue that path prescribed by the team’s medical staff, and that it likely will take significant time for the injury to fully heal.

“We have said all along that it is impossible to put a timetable on this injury. Nobody is more frustrated with that fact than Cam. He’s one of the fiercest competitors I’ve been around during my 20-plus years in the League. At this time, we have decided that the best decision to reach the goal of bringing the foot back to 100 percent is to place Cam on injured reserve.”

Newton is in his ninth NFL season after being selected by the Panthers with the No. 1 overall choice in the 2011 Draft. He has career totals of 29,041 passing yards, 182 passing touchdowns, 108 interceptions, 4,806 rushing yards and 58 rushing touchdowns. Newton won the 2011 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award and 2015 NFL AP MVP award.

If this is true I hope one day he gets a 'one day contract' and retires a Panther. His name belongs in the rafters for carrying this team for the better part of a decade through highs and lows. I hope he has 5+ more healthy years left in him because he's fun to watch and such a great personality. My only hope is that Ron and Hurn-Dog-Millionaire are out as well. Kyle Allen could be a legitimate starter in a Patriots' type offense with a great OL and reliable consistent receivers. Plus we have CMC who is a tremendous building block as well and a defense that will need some retooling but has good bones still.

Let's allow Cam to walk as well as some of our other expensive and older guys. Defensive line will need a youth movement and Bradberry/Cockrell/DJax just need one more solid guy to round the group out. After that both safety spots need to be addressed. Reid might be okay if the other S spot is upgraded.

I think we also have the start of making a serviceable OL if Little ever escapes protocol.

In short, I see a bright future for this franchise but it will take excellent management.

Cam is in a bad spot right now but I truly believe he will don that Panther jersey again.

Number 1 is an unbelievably gifted football player and there is no way you get rid of a guy with so much talent without giving him one last chance to get healthy. I believe next year will be the make or break. If he comes back fit and healthy and plays well; we resign him. If not, then yeah, he gone.

I'm certainly not ruling Cam out just yet!

Might as well go full Browns.

You guys are about to see how difficult it is to find a real NFL quarterback, unless Marty Magic really exists.

We made to the NFC Championship game with Kerry Collins, it’ll be okay.
