Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton, Empty Seats, Social Media, and Branding

I will get poo'd but....    I deal with the public at my job all day...  The Panthers are a huge topic....  When Cam comes up in discussion a wide majority of folks say they are tired of him and his antics...  Showboating, the clothes, the general circus he brings to the table...  I admit I am one of those people...  I want him to be the best Panther ever but be more business like on the field...  Watch some of the top QB's warming up....  Its all business....  Cam runs around acting like an airplane....  Maybe I just expect more out of the face of a franchise....

I was a fan of this franchise long before Cam. I will continue after he's gone, but not nearly as enthusiastically. Cam has brought out the reality of just how bigoted and disgusting more than a few are in this fan base, the (sh) city news paper even the franchise itself

There's an old expression that goes "If everywhere you go smells like poo, maybe it's time to check under your shoes".

You're right, but I also think staying with the same lame duck coaching staff after the collapse we witnessed last year has played a big role too. I noticed from training camp the difference in crowd attendance and excitement for this team even before the year started. I think fans are getting restless with this coaching staff. But yeah, Cam had Charlotte BUZZING the moment he was drafted. He created a whole new atmosphere Charlotte has never seen before. Will be a very sad day when he is gone.

A fair number of people are making the mistake of tying questions about Cam Newton's future to Kyle Allen.

There's no connection. Newton's status is up in the air because of factors that have nothing to do with Allen or anybody else.

If Newton ultimately doesn't stick around, it won't have anything to do with Allen being successful. Allen's success or failure only affects what direction the team goes in as far as replacing him.

Honestly, the fanbase is the worst part about this team. When we let Peppers go I was a senior in HS and started to lurk around a lot of Panther boards and blogs and was so turned off by the “fans” reactions. The post 2015 reactions towards Cam have been equally as embarrassing. I went to a home Panthers game for The Peppers homecoming game again the Bills in 2017 and it was my first time ever going to a Panthers game given I’m from Texas. I always heard about the treatment towards Cam from “that side” of the fan base but I always dismissed it as people overreacting to a small group. I poo you not, every sack, missed throw and run that was short a first down you heard the groans and boos from what I would say 1/10 of the stadium. Then, there was one play where Cam sat out and DA came in and couldn’t believe when people started cheering. There was even a few fans in front of us that I heard murmur something along the lines of “finally a QB worth watching”. Keep in mind, this was two years after the MVP run and a season removed from when the league declared open-season on helmet to helmet hits on Cam. also took a buddy who recently got into football and latched onto the Panthers in 2015 because I would drag him to the bars to watch the games with me and that game and experience left a really bad taste in our mouths. Now factor in the this season where fans are wanting to move on from Cam after he had a good first half of the season in 2018 and you have a huge poo storm that had been brewing for a while. Like someone above mentioned, I will still be a fan after Cam leave but less enthusiastic about it given the treatment of the two best players to suit up for this team. It was bad with Julius and even it’ll be even worse with Cam.

You are right that there is a solid faction of the Panthers fanbase that has been built over the last decade that were strictly Cam Newton fans, and not Panthers fans. Many of them jumped on the bandwagon in 2015. That’s all well and good for putting butts in the seats but does change things when Cam isn’t on the field.

It’s happened to other fanbases, maybe not on the level of Cam Newton, but it’s happened. The Dolphins suffered when Marino left and have honestly never recovered.

I’m pretty sure I saw some Kyle Allen jerseys in the stands yesterday. It will take time and victories to rebuild the fanbase.

Cam or no Cam, attending an NFL game is fugging expensive and time consuming and not something people get too thrilled about coming off one of the worst performances in franchise history.

If the team keeps winning the stands will start to fill again. I don't blame folks for not showing up for a product as inconsistent as what this franchise has put out recently though.

The older I get, the less inclined I am to go to games and spend money. It just feels like a racket these days. Everything is way overpriced and being around thousands of drunk idiots is not as appealing when you don’t drink that much anymore

I've always been more of a "act like you've been there before" guy in my own personality, but that stuff never bothered me.

Player celebrations especially are just kinda fun. I thought it sucked for all the years that the NFL was the No Fun League.

Off the field behavior only bothers me if it's criminal.
