The possibilities if Cam is IR’d

I’m not saying Cam will miss the rest of the season, but it looks like there could be a chance. Him being out the next 9 games would effect a lot concerning not only wins and losses but what the team does moving forward;

If Cam misses the rest of the season, we don’t have a clue as to what kind of player he will be in 2020. Does management and Tepper pay him and hope he gives them a decent ROI?

Does Tepper accept the obvious excuse if we have a losing season that it’s because Cam wasn’t healthy.

What happens if Kyle plays well in his absence and we make a playoff run?

There's already been speculation that his future here is in doubt regardless of what happened with Kyle Allen.

This probably doesn't help, though admittedly it's probably better than if he had tried to come back and played badly.

The fact the latter hasn't happened at least gives him a chance to catch on somewhere else if the Panthers do decide to move on from him. He has sa hefty price tag with half the defense on an expiring contract

I'm not a fan of trying to be Miss Cleo, but if you were to put a gun to my head and demand that I predict the future I'd say the most likely scenario is that he follows in Andrew Luck's footsteps and retires.

And honestly, could you blame him?

(I wouldn't)

Cam is still under contract for next year. If he's IR'ed then its likely we roll with Allen and/or see if Grier has a future here while giving Cam the rest of time to get healthy for 2020. If he's still not ready to hit the field by then, I can see the organization moving on or Cam retiring. Not sure if anything happens before then but you never know.

And no....I wouldn't blame him either if he goes the Andrew Luck route and calls it a career.

Worth remembering it's a very team friendly contract, significant savings if he's let go.

I don't think Cam will retire, unless he is permanently disabled. He has never shown a lack of enthusiasm for playing, if anything, he has shown the opposite, to a fault. If the Panthers don't want to keep him (and I think they do) he will be playing elsewhere next year.

The significant savings (~$19 million) the Panthers gain with Cam off the books next year does make this development all the more gut wrenching.

That said franchise QBs don't grow on trees. My gut says Hurney and Co. ride with Cam and pray the foot heals over the offseason.

Does your got guarantee that Hurney and company are still around to make that decision?

(I'd say that's not a given)

They are gonna roll with Cam in 2020.  They cant sign a viable replacement for much less than 19 mil anyways and Kyle costs nothing in NFL terms. Between Kyle and Cam they are probably near the league average for QB pay.

Besides, Tepper already said if Cam had to sit a year to get back to 100% then he be ok with that.

Take a look at some of the factors involved here:

Over thirty...

Twenty million dollar cap figure...

Hasn't been healthy in years...

Got injured this year in preseason on what was an average play...

Even if he gets healthy, major questions about his ability to stay healthy...

Valid questions about how much longer he can play...

...

If you were looking at all those factors on any other team, what would you expect them to do?

What would you advise that they should do?

Of course you pay him. The savings of $19 million dollars isn't that much if you understand team building, and the ever growing cap space. The cap will grow again this off-season, and again it should go up by even as much as $15 million, deflating older contracts.

What can $19 million buy you on free agency when you don't have a quarterback? It can buy you a high level defensive lineman, that wants a payday over winning. It can buy you an elite safety that wants a payday over winning. It can buy you a good cornerback, and maybe a linebacker that want a payday over winning. Just look at the teams with the most cap space, or hell, just look at the Panthers in 2016 with over 20 million in unused cap space. It won't buy you wins.

If you don't have a quarterback in this league you're not going to win.

Pay him, duh?
