You ain't spoke nothing but the truth here sir. Do we EVER do that?

Some people have suggested that Rivera just takes the same approach every game.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I do feel like the whole metaphor of Chess vs. Checkers does kind of apply here.

Indeed. I remember a quote from an interview with Steve Wilkes when he was hired as DC. Something to the effect of "we're not going to out-scheme anyone". That pretty much sums up Rivera's coaching philosophy. And it's been that way for too long. It's certainly worked but hasn't made us consistent winners.

If the Panthers lose to the Titans, there might be only 2-3 more wins on the schedule this year. 7-9 is a likely finish.

At home against Washington and Atlanta should be wins. If they aren't, Ron Rivera should be thrown out the door immediately. There's probably another win or two on the schedule somewhere...one of them probably @ Atlanta. But I'm not even confident the Panthers could win that game since they haven't won in Atlanta since 2014, coincidently another season the Falcons were about to fire their head coach.

The rest of the games are against very good teams with winning records.

49ers game was needed to secure the wild card. This game is basically you win or you get fired at the end of the season.

I don't remember that quote, but I don't doubt it. Pretty sure had I seen it at the time it came out, I probably would have cringed.

I know some guys take the approach of "we're just going to line up with our guys and beat your guys", but I find that's kinda lazy.

The difference in talent levels between NFL teams is razor thin. You've got to have more than that.

Definitely didn't feel comfortable hearing that. That's why it stood out to me.

This has been the approach since Fox was here. And I agree - its an archaic, lazy approach to game planning.  I've never been an NFL coach but it seems to me you got to bring more than that to the table to win consistently especially in this modern NFL

This is one reason I was hoping Tepper would have cleaned house when he bought the team - though I understand why he didn't. I certainly hope he takes a long hard look at all of this at season's end.

I know Tepper wants to emphasize analytics. I'm honestly not that big into analytics, but I can see where he's going.

Guys like Shanahan and Payton are taking things to the next level. If we think we can just continue doing what we've been doing and compete with that sort of stuff, I've got a feeling we're in for an unpleasant surprise.

Yeah, that works for the Clemsons and Alabamas of the world, but NFL teams can't stock their entire rosters full of 1st round picks which is basically what the Clemsons and Alabamas do with their parade of 5* recruits.

I mean, I suppose you could if you wanted to wait six or seven years to build a squad that was going to be really good for maybe one or two seasons and you're content to suck for years after that.

Heck, there are actually some fans that are so hungry for a Super Bowl trophy they'd accept that approach.

I wouldn't.

(don't really think David Tepper would either)

I hear you on that. It amazes me that teams like the Patriots, Saints and Seahawks can make impact players out of guys we've never heard of. I know - its called coaching. Meanwhile, the Panthers typically stash those types on players on the bench for a season or two (with the exception of Daley as a recent example).

Seattle is the team we would want the tie breaker over.  Not SF though.

If Cam returns.  We will be okay.   This is still the best team we have surrounded Cam with

Interesting to note that the Panthers beat the Falcons 38-0 in the first game of 2015, but since that game, Shannahan has completely owned us as offensive coordinator and head coach.
