Greg Cosell talks Titans vs Panthers

On WFNZ this morning, went thru his usual comments on the past game and then started talking about the Titans.

Said Tannehill is a much better option than Mariota at this point, Marcus got sacked over four times a game, Ryan only about 2.5. Also said Ryan is reading the defenses better. Said Titans run a lot of three TE sets so look for Panthers to be in their base 4-3 a lot

Thinks Titans D will give Panthers problems like the 9ers did. They mix their calls up a lot and hide what they’re doing well. Usually only rush 4-5 guys and are getting to the qb.

That’s good analysis. They also play some man press. And they have physical guys outside on defense.

On offense, they do love the TE. #81 Jonnu Smith appears to be a Tannehill fav: 9 rec on 10 targets the last two weeks, 142 yd, 6 first downs and a TD. That’s a healthy set of metrics for a tight end. He’s a guy I would be concerned about.

Should be a physical game.

So, Jonnu Smith is Tennessee's Kittle. I hope I don't hear his name as often as last week on National TE Day!

There were no REAL positives from that 49ers game but one thing that I think has been helpful has been the general realization of what Kyle Allen has been the whole time. As Greg says, no one in the league has considered him more than an average starter or good backup QB.

I think most of the fans got that, finally. Obviously not the militant Cam haters but they are beyond hope and really probably not actual Panthers fans anyway.

Super glad to have Kyle. He may well fix a HUGE hole in our roster(serviceable back up QB) which has existed since Anderson had begun to decline. But, we are going to need Cam back to fight for a playoff spot. We have a good team but not a great team without Cam. With 100% Cam, it might be a great team.

Yeah, there’s nothing good that comes out of the fringes of Twitter. Anywhere you find extreme opinions, you probably want to move a little more towards the middle find the truth. Kyle was never going to be the starter here long-term. I had visions for him being the number two guy here, because he has a pretty good grasp on the system. But he has limitations. Nothing has been “exposed”. It’s exactly what I thought would happen if the game got out of hand early.

One thing Cosell didn’t say: this needed to be a ball control, low-scoring game for Carolina to win. It was the formula we talked about all week, and within the first 20 minutes, the game was over. And a lot of that is on Kyle. But a lot of that is on the defense, too. It’s OK to assign credit or blame to multiple areas. It’s called nuance.

One part of that interview absolutely pissed me off.

Cosell said that the 49ers didn't do anything special with us on offense, they just did the same thing they've been doing every game this year.

So it's not like there wasn't tape to review.

Heck it's not like this wasn't something we'd already seen for a couple of years before.

Given that Rivera should have damn near intimate knowledge of how Shanahan runs and offense by now, and noting that the 49ers weren't doing anything outside their usual MO, I would have been okay if we had just lost this game. But under those conditions, getting run all up and down the field like we were a scout team is just inexcusable.

LG just reminded me that this also came after a bye week, so we actually had extra time to be prepared and we came out looking like that.

That...is a crock of sh-t.

too much time can actually be a bad thing. Pretty well established that Ron doesn’t do well with extra time.   Even in his win streak the team was playing bad and and beating bad teams.

His resume basically was the one Seattle game and teams that looked poorly prepared.

Maybe given all that time the Panthers overthink it all and do too much tinkering.

Doesn't he always give the team the bye week off?

It's a possibility.

Same result, though. Either way we wind up looking unprepared or unfit.

I’m still fine with where we are.  Needed to split SF/GB.  Need to win this week.   Think we can do both.

We are a better team than Tenn and it is at home.  We historically do well vs Rodgers and he plays into what we do well
