Its been a problem all season long and seems to be getting worse. Why is this happening when we have so much money tied in to the front 7 and supposed defensive mastermind head coach? Whats the excuse?

Panthers have traditionally been a defense that has been able to stifle opponent run games even when we're sucking overall as a team. It used to be the one thing we could hang out hats on. Now.. I'm not sure why but it's like the dline is just constantly getting stuck on blocks and turned the wrong way and all sorts of other fugery like they forgot how to play football. You shouldn't be paying grown men millions of dollars to constantly under perform against the run.

3-4 gets torched by running

I'm a big stats guy but sometimes stats are just flat out misleading.

As for Star's value, just look at what happened to our defensive rankings when he left and what happened to the Bill's defensive rankings when he arrived. We fell off and they surged.

well, and the fact Leslie Frazier is a better DC than Eric Washington.   His teams historically have been top 10 defenses as a coordinator.

Washington isn’t bringing much to the table IMO.

Yeah, ultimately I think it's a little of both losing Star and Washington taking over.  And sadly, I don't think it's getting fixed anytime soon.

true, but I thought when we signed Poe there were stats posted here showing Poe actually graded out better across the board than Star, fwiw.  I mean Poe is a lit bigger, but yeah, maybe it's no coincidence things fell off when Star left, but I really think we still have the personnel for it, it just seems we lack discipline in run fits.

Maybe it has nothing to do with size of player and everything to do with size of heart in the team as a whole. Just seems like they don't have that fire in the tank like the Niners and other great teams do. It's all about attitude, you have to lay it all on the line and go all out for 4 complete quarters, but the Panthers rarely seem to do that. Good coaches and leaders find ways to keep their team hungry, focused and motivated... We see it from time to time, it's just not close to consistent enough.

We traded size for speed on the edges. The pass rush improved, but the run D tanked. We could really use a Wes Horton type right now.

Teams take on the personality of their head coach

It’s not fixable.

we’ve sacrificed power for speed on the edges. Our defensive ends can be blocked by tight ends which frees up guards to go get Luke and Shaq.

only way to improve it is to run blitz more, but Ron and company won’t do that because it will expose how weak our secondary (sans Bradberry) is in coverage.

How about one power edge and one speed edge combine?

Power side:Obada Cox Mario

Speed side:Burns Miller Haynes Irvin
