By the numbers: 32 things we’ve learned about the 32 offenses

Through six weeks of the 2019 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs have the top-ranked offense, according to Football Outsiders’ efficiency metrics, and the Miami Dolphins are last. Neither of those rankings is surprising, but some of the teams in between them are.

In this week’s column, we take a numbers-based look at one thing we’ve learned from each offense going into Week 7. Teams are listed according to their efficiency rankings. Numbers are courtesy of Sportradar unless otherwise noted.

22. Carolina Panthers

What we’ve learned: Their offense has been helped by their defense and special teams. The Panthers’ average starting field position on offensive drives has been their 33.42 yard line. That’s the best average starting field position for any offense.

A lot of stats get lost in football of what actually matters.

Turnovers matter a ton. Defense causing and offense none.

average field position matters a ton.

scoring touchdowns on short fields matters a ton. Stopping touchdowns matters a ton. Make them bend and break, bend and cause turnovers and not break— matters a ton

fluff stats like passer rating, passing yards, etc are all fluff if you don’t score touchdowns.

defensive stats like 1st in total yards don’t matter if you have a worst than 15th scoring defense. Worst yet again is no or really low turnovers.

You forgot an important one the Panthers are absolutely killing: penalty yards. Possessions, games literally hang on penalties. We are playing soooo incredibly clean this year and our opponents are literally killing themselves with penalties in attempting to slow down our offense and defense.

You mean like last night when people said the bears had one of the best Ds in the league but could stop the saints anywhere on the field. That's what the Panthers do to teams as well.
