Believe that quote was originally aimed at Bear Bryant. One of Bryant’s statements that has meaning today was when told Alabama alumni upon his hiring not to get involved recruiting players. "If you are giving anybody any money, for anything, I want you to stop right now”. "I've done it, and I've found out if you pay 'em, they'll quit on you."

I recall being told it was about Shula but now that you mention it I've never bothered to verify that, so it's entirely possible. Never heard your Bryant quote, but it's something all major college coaches should think on.
