I find it interesting that so many Cam backers want him to sit against San Fran and return vs Tennessee

because it's not about that dummy it's about putting the best players on the field. it's easy to bench allen because he's not the best quarterback on the roster. trying to compare that situation to this one is so incredibly stupid that idk where you could have possibly thought the conversation could have gone

If Kyle Allen was on the team in 2013, do you think people would have been calling for Cam to be benched after that win?

I cannot speak for anybody else, but personally, I would like to see Cam sit until we play ATL. SF, TEN, and GB are all in the top 10 for defenses getting after the QB. ATL is tied for last. I want Cam to take as little punishment as possible after investing all of this time to get him healthy, so if Kyle Allen can go in and pull off a W at any of those 3 games then Cam not only gets the FULL 6 - 8 week recovery period, he gets one extra.

Rivera is notoriously bad coming off of the bye week. Cam will be hitting that 6 week mark in his recovery. Given the choice of marching him out there against three strong defenses, at the very least you give Allen the opportunity to go out there and pilot the offense against a top ranked defense. If he loses, Cam needs to be prepared to return for GB should they drop the game vs. TEN. If Allen can win vs. SF and/or TEN, then Cam gets the luxury of having until the home game vs ATL for his welcome back party :D

I believe that the team is good enough to win with Kyle Allen at QB during the regular season. I want the QB that is best for the team to win the Super Bowl to be in top condition, and that QB is Cam Newton.

We haven't lost coming off a bye week since 2014...and that was in the midst of a 5-game losing streak anyway.  This is one of those myths that's still blindly perpetuated on these boards.

It’s the rust thing that’s the issue for me.

If he is so rusty he looks like ass in practice, maybe, but presumably he has been practicing at some level before this point.  I don't know - depends on how much rust we are talking.  But I trust him to come out strong if he is healthy and practiced.

Practice is much different then game time live action.

the first games of the year everyone is rusty, cams at a different level than nfl players right now because of his time off rehabbing. I think the best course of action is for him to not play the #2 passing defense his first game back. He needs game time reps to get back into full swing. I think the coaching staff knows this as well.

but poo he could be fine. This is all speculation obviously.

Speculation yes......"rusty".....comments like that just make one appear to be reaching.  Bottom line if your walking on that field......the player and coaching agreed your good enough to play to win the game, point blank.  No excuses!  My gosh Cam been a QB for how long now?!?  People here think he is ELITE.....so again, No excuses if your walking onto the field for the 49ers game.

True, but if Cam is who we believe he is, he will quickly kick off rust I think, and I think he will rise to the occasion.

All this depends on practice ofc.  I know game time is different, but that gives the team an idea of just how rusty he is.

There is the other aspect that it is unfair to either cam or allen to give them partial reps leading up to SF and then asking them to start... We need to ride with one of them (for this week).

I hope you’re right and I agree. We need to make a statement vs the 49ers

Numbers never lie, but they also never tell the full story. Let's take a look at Rivera's results post-Bye week:

  • 2011: TEN 30 - 3 CAR
  • 2012: DAL 19 - 4 CAR
  • 2013: CAR 6 - 22 ARI
  • 2014: CAR 13 - 31 MIN
  • 2015: CAR 27 - 23 SEA
  • 2016: CAR 30 - 20 ARI
  • 2017: CAR 35 - 27 NYJ
  • 2018: NYG 31 - 33 CAR

Rivera is 4-4 after the Bye week. He has never beaten a team with a winning record while coming off of the Bye week.

Combined record of the teams we have beaten coming off of the Bye: 10-15-1 (.384)
Combined record of the teams we have lost to coming off of the Bye: 12-16 (.426)

You could easily argue that it's Newton who has been notoriously bad after the by week.  2018 is the only decent game he's had after a bye

Year - Completion % -  TD - Int

2011 - 57.5% 0 1

2012  56.8%  1 1

2013  53.8%  0 3

2014  51.4%  1 1

2015  55.6%  1 2

2016  51.9%  0 0

2017  39.3%  0 0

2018  60.0%  2 2

If your MVP QB is putting up consistently poor numbers and the team is putting up consistently poor results after the Bye week, then I see that more as an indication of something lacking from the coaching staff.

Qbs are generally rusty first couple games of seasons. That isn’t reaching. It’s just a reality of playing football.

if Cam starts vs the 9ers I expect he’s ready and for us to win. Just as if Kyle starts I expect us to win.

I think it may be reaching. Take a look at the stats of the leagues best QBs over the first 3 games. All have QBRs over 110 usually.

The record of the team at the time of the game is not relevant. You must look at how they performed over the year to judge a team. Seattle was a playoff team in 2015 obviously as we faced them in the playoffs.

To continue to refer to him as an MVP QB is exaggerated considering he won it once and was only in part discussion another time in 8 seasons. Even then 2015 year, the first half of the season was anything but MVP calibre before setting the league on fire. He is the definition of inconsistent, yet here we are blaming coaches for that. 2015 was four years ago, might as well continue to call him the ROY QB.
