Gotta say, having the bye this week is actually a pretty good thing for the team.

Kinda sucks for us, though.

Not sure about everybody else, but me? I'm pretty anxious to see what happens next (and not just on the quarterback front).

Seconded.

I'm hoping Short is back, but anxious to see if Butler starts to see more time in the rotation.

Daley said he didn't think he did a good job, but it seemed like he did. Am interested to see if Little has recovered and/or if Daley retains his spot. Also am hoping Trai returns.

And who is going to return kicks now?

Lots of good things to keep track of before the next game.

Short's out for the year.

49ers defense on pace to allow fewest passing yards since 1982

The thought of their pass rushers going against our line scares me.

We'll probably have to run the offense a lot like we did against the Texans, focusing on short to intermediate (and very quickly thrown) passes .

That should be their concern, more than ours.  We've recorded 10 more sacks than they have (albeit it in 1 more game)

If Daley can hold up against that SF D line I will crown his ass.  That is gonna be a test.

They actually gave him some help last game (Person characterized it as a lot).

Of course, as Mr. Miyagi once said, "best way avoid punch no be there".

Can't sack the quarterback if the pass is already thrown.

Some additional thoughts...

With the changes we're seeing right now, it's probably a good time to remember that in the last year and a half, we've undergone a shift in offensive philosophy. That shift plays into the current discussion.

Rivera was a student of Buddy Ryan. When he was coaching the Eagles, Ryan's philosophy was that he only needed quarterback Randall Cunningham to make two or three big plays a game and his defense would handle the rest.

Sound familiar?

To be clear, that philosophy didn't really play out under Rob Chudzinski (Chud had his own ideas) but once we made the shift to Mike Shula it became pretty evident. Rivera, Shula and Newton even managed to be more successful with it than Ryan and Cunningham ever were.

For a year...

Then the wheels kinda fell off. Rivera ultimately realized it wasn't working anymore, so he made a change at offensive coordinator.

Enter Norv...

Turner runs a traditional Coryell, and he set out teaching Newton to be the kind of quarterback that could run that attack. Mind you, you could still run him if you wanted to, but that was no longer going to be the focus.

So Turner's scheme was installed, and for the first half of the 2018 season, it looked amazing.

But then...well, you know the story.

Luckily for us, Kyle Allen had already been practicing the offense and picked it up with no trouble. Per Albert Breer, the team didn't even have to scale anything back like you normally would expect with a rookie starter. We didn't miss a beat.

And here we are...

Now let's be honest, Kyle Allen isn't the kind of guy you ask to be a one man offense. He can't do the kind of things that you've seen Cam Newton do (sadly, right now neither can Cam). Allen is more of a traditional quarterback, the kind whose job is just to distribute the ball to his playmakers and let them run with it.

But here's the good news...

That style fits the offense that Norv Turner runs just fine.

So no, we don't have a quarterback who can be a one man offense any longer, but that's okay because we're not running a one man offense.

Kyle Allen isn't supposed to be a solo act.

And here's the thing...

Neither was Newton (not anymore).

* Looking at McCaffrey's production from this past weekend *

Yeah, pretty sure actuall

So the entire evidence of the Panthers not being a 1 man offense...is looking at a single game and ignoring the rest of the season?

Interesting move.  Don't get me wrong.  I fully understand why you'd want to ignore everything that contradicts that statement.  But its abundantly clear that the Panthers are a 1 man offense.  We had to punt 7 times last game, barely moved the ball and had to rely on FGs way too often on short field turn overs...when our 1 man offense got shut down.

Our main offensive weapon got shut down twice this year. But the second time, we won anyway.

That included a 99 yard drive where the football went to several different people.

I'm guessing your belief is that they all threw the ball to themselves.

Receving TDs 2019 Carolina Panthers

1)D.J. Moore (1) WR1

2) C. McCaffery (2) RB

3) Greg Olsen (2) TE

4) Curtis Samuel (2) WR2

so nah i wouldn't consider this a one dimensional offensive attack...just saying

I definitely agree with the point that regardless of who plays qb, a bad game won't really tell us much or be an indictment against them. San Francisco's pass defense has been lights out this year. They just made Jared Goff look like Jimmy Clausen. Where I disagree is that a great game by Allen should really elevate his standing. If he goes on the road and leads this team to a victory against the current number 1 team in the conference and the top ranked passing defense and actually has a great game, I don't know how anyone can continue to say he's not a bona fide starter (which remains a too popular opinion here)
