If we traded Cam as the previous poster suggested, how in the world are you saying he wouldn't have the ammo? That's absolutely laughable. That suggestion was what led to this line of conversation.

I wasn't talking about it in terms of a trade, just in general (only responded to your post).

2 Things

1.  KA is progressing each week, we have no idea of his ceiling

2.  Cam is still rehabbing, we have no idea of his status until he comes back.

We could have 2 fantastic QB's, which is every GM's wet dream, or, we could have 2 mediocre guys and be talking Grier, which I would hate.

Square wheels guys, square wheels

I’m not convinced the team could sign him to a large deal even if they wanted to.  UDFAs have to wait until after 2 accrued seasons if I’m reading this correctly.

You are correct. He literally can’t take more than an ERFA contract until 2021.

Even if we didn't trade Cam we're going to have a decision to make. How do you think we'd be able to hang onto Allen with an ERFA tender with his agent hearing whispers if not outright shouts that there are starting opportunities out there with commensurate contracts? They're gonna hold out and demand a big contract or a trade.

How are you going to get him for pennies on the dollar? As I understand it he's a restricted free agent after this season putting us in the driver's seat to retain him but if you trade Cam and show your hand he and his agent are going to demand a starting QB contract and they're going to hold out if you don't give it to them. "Starting QB contract" in today's NFL = $20M+ per year average.

Allen is an ERFA for the next 2 years I believe and then becomes an RFA. We have all the leverage over him and will have him extremely cheap for the next 2 years at least and then the right to match any offer sheet he would sign and if no offer sheets, use the tag (once or twice) after the RFA year. Allen is an absolute bargain for the near future, no matter what.

If Allen is in a position to sit out, I trade him and rake it in. I rehab Cam's rep and trade him too before I pay him 30 mil long term.

You have picks to get a good QB from a team and still have picks and cap space to take care of business.

edit: and you do have Grier to develop still. I hope to one day become a Grier fan

We only have the leverage if we want him as a backup. If we want him as the starter, the ball is ultimately in his court. He can take his ball and go home until we're ready to break out the checkbook. And if we want him as a backup only then we'd be dumb to play hardball. We'd be better off to take a trade offer and move on with Grier as the backup.

You don’t understand how the CBA works do you?

See above, I don’t think he can get a new contract even if the team wants to give him one next year.  He doesn’t have the accrued seasons.

He can sit out all he wants, the team still can’t give it to him.
