A little perspective on Allen

Do you know how weird y'alls emotional attachment to him is?

In reality they are all just football players and strangers. Most of us don't actually know any of them on a close personal level.

Haha, well in that case.  Isn't it weird that you signed onto an online forum discussing a game with grown men in pads that hit each for 60 minutes and fight over a pig skin?  So yeah, "in reality" anything can sound weird.

I believe Allen tells it like it is. He gives credit to cmc and the defense.  He is lucky he hasnt lost all those fumbles and for them to be converted into touchdowns. He is playing avg. He is not lighting any defense up except for poor Arizona who just got their first win sunday.  We love to over hype our guys but realistically these wins fall on Defense, OL, CMC. Period.

I want you to imagine something. Imagine we had taken Allen with the third round pick this season instead of Grier.

Now let the season play out as it has and you'd have a third round pick playing undefeated and actively being a part of those victories.

You'd be shouting the praises of the guy, the pick and our future.

The kid has earned some adulation and many, many hurrahs.

No slam at all on Cam, but if your draft pick comes off the bench and wins out not just one game, but three in a row, you have a reason to cheer.

To me it was clear in training camp that Allen is more NFL ready.  Draft position is a sunk cost, what else can you call it?

The team won those games. He’s been decent, but let’s stop it like the defense and CMC hasn’t carried him. He almost gave the game away last game.

But he did not give the game away. We did win right? He is 3-0 this year. Does it really matter how? Are we now keeping style points?

You know, we can root for Kyle, and still love Cam? Right?

Of course the team won those games, the team always wins or loses. We seem to forget that sometimes around here.

Really? Please remind everyone what happened in the first 2 games.

Imagine he was our first round draft pick this year and compare him against the other 1st round QBs playing right now. We'd still be happy just looking at the win totals since he came in.

(And like I said before, this isn't meant to be a slam on Cam at all. It's also not meant to be a slam on Grier, who could potentially also play lights out if he got the chance -- we just don't know.)

No doubt that Allen has surprised everyone here but when you attempt to put him in the same class as a healthy Cam you’re going to far.

Don't compare him to Cam, no one can compare to Cam -- the guy has skills and abilities that no other QB has ever had. Compare Allen's performance to other first and second year QBs in the league playing right now.

Excellent point.  He was an undrafted free agent and he has been better than many first rounders.  Win win for us

Right, but if your expectation is that your 2nd year backup qb should be capable of putting the team on his shoulders and carrying the team to victory, you might as well tell the kid to grow a mustache.

You could make a case that he did just that in the Arizona game as a deflated Panthers team came into that game 0-2 after losing their star QB, traveling cross country with the fans and sports writers lamenting the imminent firing of Ron Rivera.

And then this lil dude walks out onto a field as some local boy getting his one last chance to make it in his hometown. Four touchdowns, no interceptions. And we all went wow.

Very true. We can all sit back now and say "Well it's really CMC carrying this team." and that's not wrong, but I don't recall anybody here expecting Allen to throw 4 TD's against the Cards. I know I didn't.

That is simply not true.  The competition created by having Allen and Grier was and is a good thing for this team.

Even if Grier never ends up playing a meaningful regular season down it was still a good pick.

We were the only team to have not spend a draft pick on a QB in 8 years.  You cannot perpetually not address depth at the most important position on the team.

Cam was a tank for his first 6 seasons, but his injuries had started to creep up, and it was absolutely necessary.

And to call Will Grier a bust at this point is absurd.  He's a rookie coming from a conference that played spread concepts with little defense to read.  Give him some time.  He was the 100th pick in the draft.

The Redskins drafted Haskins at 15 and are giving him a year to develop on the bench.  Anything we got out of Grier this year was found money.

Also, there was simply too small a sample size to feel confident going into the season with Allen as Cam's only backup.  And now that Cam is hurt, we would have needed a competent 3rd QB anyway, so that alone is validation for the Grier pick.

The Panthers in one offseason went from having arguably the worst backup QB situation in the league to one of the best.  That is a good thing.

Preach it!
