Update On Where The Panthers Stand in The NFL W-L/Playoffs Wise (Through 5 Weeks)

Since San Francisco is undefeated them losing or winning won't affect us tonight on MNF. 

I never cheer for any player to get injured, but the league got a lot more interesting this past weekend. Chiefs looked by far and away to be the best team, and they lost to the Colts of all teams.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the Browns beat the 49ers tonight and leave the Patriots as the only undefeated team left in the NFL. 

A lot of the league is a big jumble. Look here through 5 weeks : 

  • Only two undefeated teams (Patriots 5-0, 49ers 3-0) 
  • Six 1 loss teams
  • ELEVEN 2 loss teams (including Panthers) 
  • Six 3 loss teams
  • Five 4 loss teams
  • Two 5 loss teams

So there is a grand total of 23 other NFL teams either with at least 2 or more losses, and only 8 teams with less than 2 losses. 

6 NFC teams are 3-2.  Currently we're ranked as the 11th seed in the playoff picture though, with the Bears, Rams, Vikings, Cowboys, Eagles all being 3-2 like the Panthers but having some tie breakers over the Panthers (they all have better NFC conference records than the Panthers).

Long story short we need to improve our NFC conference record to have a shot at the wild card, but then again we're only one game behind the Saints and play them 2x.

This next game against Tampa is the most critical contest of the season thus far. Getting swept by the Bucs would kill the Panthers hopes for competing for the division crown and would tank our NFC Conference record down even further. 

Also keep in mind 8 out of the next 9 contests are against NFC opponents so we're getting into a really important middle stretch of the season.

WAAAAY too early to be worrying about playoff positioning. We've won 3 straight and are absolutely making the playoffs if we continue to get competent QB play the rest of the season.

I'm just really sick to damn DEATH of the Saints. I'm shocked that they're undefeated without Drew Brees.

Pretty much. Even if we win and the Saints lose next weekend, even though we would both end up 4-2, the Saints would still be in 1st place by virtue of having a better NFC conference record.

Its not too early if we lose to the bucs on Sundays, mainly b/c our NFC Conference record would be in the toilet at that point.

Good post, really puts things into perspective.  We have to win our division and conference games.  This game against TB is a must win!!!

Writing is on the wall. The NFL is going to give Brees a retirement party, just like they did for Peyton Manning.
